Hello all forum members. I am new here, but not to Tacos. I have had three. i have also owned a total of seven other HD trucks in my life time. Currently, I am selling my 2013 White Taco TRD Sport Crew Cab 4X2 Long Bed with 41,000 miles. I am replacing it with a 2016 Taco of similar model cab, bed and trim but, in my color of choice, silver and 3 years newer with 15,000 miles on it. I was about to install a Blue Ox base plate on the 2013 Taco in order to flat tow it. Of course, I was also going to have a REMCO driveshaft disconnect installed by a local RV service center to isolate the drive train. Has anyone on the forum had any experience with making these modifications to a 2016 Taco? I am wondering if with the body design in 2016, are there any pearls of wisdom to be shared by more informed and experienced members. I have installed a Roadmaster base plate and a rear hitch on a 2015 Honda Fit, all in one day with a friend lending me a hand. You do need more than two to do it at home. But, I have no experience with outfitting Tacos for flat towing. I know it can be done. I'm just looking for any pointers or cautions that would be helpful for doing the job (DIY) on a 2016, from more experienced Taco drivers. Thank you in advance for you advise and insight.

That's ok, gearcruncher. I just posted an hour ago. But, I will do a write up when I get into the grind of doing the mods. I just want to be a informed as possible. I am checking but, I really don't believe they altered the frame when the did the body style change in 2016. I do need to find out exactly when I would need to modify the air dam and, hopefully not the bumper in order to install the Blue Ox base plate. Certainly, the front facia on the 16's and 17's are different in design. Thank you for responding. I will continue the research and planning.

Update: Superior Driveline, an offshoot of REMCO, does make a driveshaft disconnect for the 2016 Taco 4X2, crew cab, long bed. Also, Blue Ox does make a base plate for flat towing same Taco without requiring and external crossbar. No significant changes were made to the chassis frame rails and cross members, etc., in order to accommodate the body style changes first introduced in the 2016 model year. And, it is no more difficult to do this job on the newer models, than in the second generation Tacos. I did not research the first generation Tacos. It would be wise, in my limited experience installing base plates and rear tow hitches, to have a second set of hands to do the job safely and efficiently. Allow the better part of a day if you choose to DIY. Have the right tools, of course. You were right, gearcruncher. Thanks again. :hattip:

I did a driveshaft disconnect on my 4Runner. I did have some problems with vibrations. Sent the driveshaft in for rebalancing at least two times. Turned out that the two pieces were balanced in one position, but the reconnect allowed for four different possible positions. I had them mark both pieces of the driveshaft and then when reconnecting I had to manually position the marks so they were together in the correct position or get lucky on reconnect for the vibrations to cease.

It was kinda a pain, but worth being able to tow behind my RV. Hope you don't have a similar issue.

    Welcome to TW!

Great info guys !!!! keep it coming
The towing bible is all about things you tow behind your Tacoma .
I think we need to add a chapter in that bible for the guys that plan on towing their trucks https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-tacoma-towing-bible.4031/

I am certain a lot of members dont know that they can kill an auto transmission by towing a 2 wheel drive truck without popping the rear driveshaft off .
