So, are the bugs out of the 17 models? Or are they (as some say) a Turdgen

Hit or miss, some people just like to complain over anything. I support the 3rd gen 100% and most of the issues people have shouldn't even make it onto here. Just take it to the dealer if you have an issue under warranty.

I and many others have had no issues, but I took the list of "common problems" to the dealer when I bought the truck and told them I want ALL of the items double checked.

 

I would wait for the next model year (2018) as see how things panned. Some major issues are not quite ironed out yet. I think they are getting close.

 

Depends on the engine and tranny combo. The most bugs seem to be with the 3.5L and/or the mating AT. There are significantly fewer butthurt owners for any other config.

 

If you think its a turd gen maybe you should get a colorado.

 

The dash has some random vibration, the truck bed is in the front lawn and it's currently on fire in my garage due to the transmission shifting too much.

I'm honestly pretty happy with the truck and have almost 800 miles on it.

 

LOL, I did. I have a 16, and it's been a love/hate relationship, at about 40% Love, 60% hate. It's my particular truck for some of it.

 

And still no remote start?

 

Mine might tear up tomorrow. I have had some small issues with it but everything has been corrected. I like my truck but it is definitely a truck you have to get used to driving.

 

Or a 2nd gen....

So how long did it take to iron all the issues in the 2nd gen?

 

No clue.. I chose to get a new '15 last july instead of waiting for the 16s.

Make your own decisions but do you really think there will be a significant difference between the 17 and 18?

 

historically, yes. You would hope that they would address some of the 'issues' from the 16s/17s

 

If you can wait do so.

There are some active issues that still need solved: 17's are still shipping with unplugged "ocarina" front LCAs; Howling rear diffs; 6 spd Transmission software is still a mess with gear hunting, flaring, and hard shifting. Non-scooped hoods are separating from their frames. The QC at final is not sorted as trucks are hitting lots with mis-torqued fastners, mis-aligned beds, etc.

 

Very true, but the so-called issues that fester at Tacomaworld may not be issues to Toyota, subsequently no changes

 

everything is working within toyotas specification lol... at least thats what they like to say.

As for other stuff -- this is an enthusiast forum and the Tacoma is a market leader. So you get a lot of people who can be a bit particular and the problems that exist will tend to be magnified. Especially by an echo chamber effect of folks looking for problems because of what they read here. Doesn't help that there are some bad dealers compounding the problem with crappy customer service. Now that doesn't mean those folks aren't having real problems, my comment is that the perception can be skewed. Remember that unhappy folks speak loud, and many jump on the bandwagon whenever someone else complains of an issue they're having. Happy folks tend to be a lot quieter about things.

The real question is whether the Tacoma is the best fit for your needs/wants. Buying something else that doesn't do what you want is kinda dumb. A truck that you dislike or isn't able to do what you want does you no good either.

Should you buy now or wait? The financially smart choice is always wait if you can, but not so long that you can't walk away from a bad offer and/or order the exact config you want.

 

I haven't had any issues worth my 16 trd off road DCLB AT I've had it almost a year and taken it on several road trips. It does seem to shift a lot but I chalk that up to it being a 6 speed AT its never concerned me. No whistling noises, no squeaking, no noises from the diff's. I don't think Toyota will ever release a "turdgen" of anything. If you're concerned they offer an extendable bumper to bumper warranty when you're purchasing. I was / am more concerned about all the new electrical computer stuff than the engine and drive train, it's a tacoma they have a proven track record of engine drive trains, even if it is new for the gen 3's I'd put full faith in mine going forever.
