Mine is doing the exact same thing. I'll start reading the thread asap. Thanks for posting your truck symptoms.

Good to hear you had success! These lockers definitely can go bad if unused. Keep using it and you will likely not have issues.

How fast can you drive with the e locker engaged in 2wd? Can I be able to drive it on the freeway with it on?

Can and should are two different things. You CAN drive with it engaged at freeway speeds, however, you SHOULD not. The locker by design does not allow the rear wheels to spin at different speeds. When you turn even slightly the outside wheel needs to spin faster than the inside wheel. With the locker engaged it will bind if turning on a hard surface increasing tire wear dramatically.

Instead of driving back and forth and hoping it will lock (stop blinking), try (from a stop) turning your steering wheel all the way to the left (or to the right) and begin to roll forward. It should stop blinking within a foot or two!

This mod is for 4WD Tacomas only (who only have locker available in L4) so they can have a locker in H4 and H2 (2WD). Obviously, 2WD Tacomas don't need the mod since the locker (if equipped) works in 2WD.

The locker is for getting unstuck. If you are on a paved road, driving fast, etc. YOU ARE NOT STUCK!
Use it when you begin to have tire spin or before crossing deep mud or climbing a steep, dirt grade where you anticipate tire spin.

As stated, when locked, the back tires can not rotate at different speeds, as they must when turning. If they can't slip in a turn then you risk damage, or if at a high speed: losing control! Please don't give Toyota a reason to discontinue the locker because you did something stupid and killed yourself!

I'm going to try the wheel all the way left or right suggestion. I find that now that I've used it a few times it is locking much faster but I do need to roll forward or backward a couple feet at a minimum. I'll let you know if it seems faster with the steering wheel all the way over. Thanks for the tip!

De nada! It was something I learned here on TW, and it worked every time. Mind you, I don't use the locker except for testing because my truck has the A-TRAC system which "auto-locks" both the front and back if there is tire spin on either end.

No can do, I gave up at page 3. One of the more painful reads on this website. "Will this work on a pre runner?" "Will this work if I don't have a locker?" "Can I add a switch so I can unlock the diff?"

It's a mod. to be able to use your rear locker in 4hi since you can only use your rear locker in 4lo. If you don't have a locker you can't do the grey wire mod. Since it's meant to do what I described above. If you have a prerunner, you don't have 4 wheel drive so you don't need to do it either. Cause prerunner's already have a button to push to use your rear locker and you don't have to worry about 4hi or low.

I think you missed my point..... I was not asking those questions. I was quoting them from what I read in the first 3 pages of this thread. I gave up on reading this thread because of questions like that.

Okay random question that may be answered in the thread (sorry I haven't read it)

I did the grey wire mod the day after I bought my truck so this doesn't apply to me, but I thinking the other day and curiousity made me wonder the following..

So we know that if you have ABS, any time the diff is locked it defeats the ABS, my question is, if you haven't done the grey wire mod, but hit the button to lock it while in 2wd or 4hi (so the light just flashes and of course won't lock) will this still defeat the ABS while the button is pushed in? Or does it only shut down ABS once the diff physically locks?

Random question I know, but if that worked that seems like a simple and temporary ABS defeat for someone who hasn't done the grey wire mod.

Or maybe I've just had to many

I just did this on my 2004 and, as everyone already said, super easy!

I didn't read through every page, but one thing I'll note is that my connector did not have 5 pins on top and 5 on bottom, but 4 on top with a space in the middle and 6 on the bottom.

    1 2 _ _ 3 4
    10 9 8 7 6 5

It was still pin 8 and a gray wire, but just a different connector than the one illustrated on page 1 of this thread.

Alright, I finally got around to doing the "Grey Wire Mod" on my 2002 3.4l TRD. When I first spliced the new ground to the truck I used the kick panel screw, only to find that the mod did not wot as to my diff lock light still flashing and the e-locker not engaging. I relocated the ground to the bolt just above it and it was still flashing. I drove the truck around the yard and it finally engaged and now it engages every time after that. I don't know if it wasn't making a good connection or the motor was a little cold/seized. Any input?

I'm still planning to do the mod. Don't know why I haven't yet! Anyway, it took a bit to get my locker working but after using it a couple of times it was way faster. I posted about it in this thread somewhere. Thanks for reminding me to do this before winter!

The diff actuator can become stuck from not using. Use it once a month for keeping it working correct. It not locking right away had nothing to do with your ground.
