I successfully got diminished value compensation back in 2005. Truck less than three months old. I paid 25K for the truck and got $2500 for the diminished value. (rear ended, fairly minor damage) I did have to fight with the other guys insurance company. I refused to sign off on the claim until they made a reasonable offer. Took me over a year, but was worth it.

As long as it's repaired to factory spec by a Toyota certified collision repair center you should have no issues.

Yeah backed into at a gas pump. Person towing a trailer and their flipflop stuck under the gas while in reverse. Yeah it could have been worse if I had been 10 seconds sooner I would have been between the truck and trailer.

I never really understood the details of situations like this. I would think almost all people should be compensated for diminished value when in an accident and not at fault. Yes they usually fix the truck as good as new, but a potential buyer of a used truck is ALWAYS going to take it into consideration that the vehicle was in an "accident" and that is inevitably going to bring the value down.

Why should the person who has no fault be responsible for the diminished value?

If the diminished value is something you can persue and it costs you nothing, do it. If you used the repair shop your insurance company recommended then they normally guarentee the work for life( I had progressive and they did work for me 5 years after the accident no questions). If not, ask the shop how long they guarentee this work and check it every once in a while. After that, if you see rust, clean it up, POR-15, Napa chip guard and good!

    It's just cosmetic, no sweat!

So I finally got my truck back. So glad I am not driving the Nissan POS I was driving. Overall they did a good job and I am happy with what they did, but I am going to send it back to have a couple minor issues resolved. The radiator support and internal stuff looks good, but there was some orange peel on the bumper which the service rep pointed out and said they would take care of. I need it back due to a family trip otherwise I would not have taken it.

In the day and age of Carfax, yes, the damage is a real concern on value. If you plan to own it for longer than 5yrs, don't sweat it. If you plan to trade or sell in less than that its a crap shoot if the dealer/buyer will care enough to offer you less because of it's history. It will never be a 'Certified Used Toyota' because of the damage.

The only reprieve on value is if it's leased. I've had leased vehicles with significant damage following an accident. I let the dealer make the repairs in this instance so they have full records on the quality of the repair and don't give me any BS when returning at lease end.
