San Carlos is a great and simple drive. 8 hrs from N. Phx, including boarder crossing time. It is a divided highway and a US hassle free zone, which means no vehicle permit or visa (immigration form) is needed, and the military check points will all just wave you through. There is a nice resort hotel in SC, and a few smaller mom and pop places to stay. One place is $35 a night or $45 a night if you want AC. Several nice restaurants. SC use to be a major resort town, with a Club Med just outside of it, but the US travel warning really hurt it. It is still a fishing village and hurricane safety harbor, so tons of sail boats. The movie Catch 22 did it's famous beach landing a few miles outside of SC.

I have done the drive to SC several times in the last few years, my parents secure their sailboat there when they are visiting the states for extended periods of time.

The diving is amazing and they have several boats that go out. Just at the harbor entrance is a dive spot called "The Aquarium" and has the best night diving I have ever seen. I use to travel down on a charter bus with a local dive shop.


For those that don't have a passport, you can get a passport card for 1/3 the cost and it works for all ground boarder crossings into the US. Boat and flight is the only thing that requires a full passport.

I finally got around to ordering mine. Only took a little over a week. My last two Mexico trips I just used my birth certificate. Which they have to let you back in if you're a citizen but they usually hardass you a bit.

I just went yesterday! I always have a blast at those things. Tickets are much cheaper if purchased in advance though. I think it is well-worth going and seeing everything. The number of off-road vehicles this year is down from what there's been in the past. They have had trophy trucks on display in the past but not really much this year aside from a Vore Racing truck. Always fun to go check out the new Raptors (and Shelby F-150s) and see all of the vehicles for auction.
