TL;DR: 1st Gen Tacoma (looks like actually '98-2004 Tacoma for these part numbers) OEM Integrated rotary fog-light switch on the headlight switch/stalk on the steering column. It works but you gotta do some wiring...see the bottom of this post for part numbers.

I'm in a 2003 Dbl Cab Tacoma TRD 4x4. Its got a set of PIAAs rigged up from the P.O. that was using some random, generic rocker switch that stuck out a mile and didn't even fit correctly into the rectangular hole the guy cut out in the dash :( and I've wanted to change it up but have found the Tacoma to be severely lacking in the switch blank department. I've got an auto and the e-locker, so between the diff lock switch, the ECT switch, and the hazard light switch, my dash is basically already full (other than the two lower ones under the radio down by the shifters, but those are not very convenient to reach). So I figured I needed to switch it up a bit in there and a couple of the things I came up with were:
    • relocate the ECT switch down low by the shifter (this is going to take some extension to the wiring and will be later. fwiw, i already found a horizontal style ECT switch out of a non-USA hillux)
    • relocate the fog light switch into a combination headlight switch/stalk on the column like is found in 3rd Gen 4Runners (and Land Cruisers and a whole slew of other Toyota vehicles)
So I searched and searched and never found anybody doin' this on a 1st Gen Tacoma, but I did find folks retrofitting it on the 3rd Gen 4Runners that didn't come with fogs, so I figured it might work on my 2003 Tacoma...(even though I already knew that the 4Runners are inherently different still as some of them came with most of the wiring still even if they didn't get the OEM fog-lights...mostly the later years...like 98+)

Anyway, so once I saw the T4R guys doing it, I was like, ok, for sure it'll work on my 2003 Tacoma--the 4Runner is so freaking close to the same as the Tacoma, I'd bet the switches just drop right in. And, well, I was right, but first I was wrong....

So I grabbed the part number the T4R guys were doing and tracked a used one down on ebay and ordered it up. Got it in and to my disappointment, it didn't fit. The main "box" part of the switch was much larger and it would not fit into the same slots on the column as my original one. Then as I was looking at them in disappointment, and then looking back at different ones I would find in searches on ebay, and looking up the part numbers in the EPC, I noticed there were two unique versions of the 3rd Gen T4R switch stalk. One that was listed as for 08/1999-2002, and then another one that was for 07/1998-07/1999. Then looking closer to the images of them on ebay and elsewhere, I noticed the "box" section of the switch on the earlier T4R one looked a lot closer to the "box" section of the switch out of my 2003 Tacoma. Then I noticed in the EPC, that that one was listed also to fit the 1993-1999 Celica. So I tracked one down on ebay from a 96 Celica that had the rotary fog-light switch on it and ordered it up. I was super stoked to find out when it arrived that it fit right in, plugged right in, and all my lights still functioned as normal (yeah, I shoulda checked the wiring diagrams, but, meh, I didn't). It just needs a couple extra pins wired up for the fog light to work. The junkyard one came with a short bit of the wiring harness so just have to figure out exactly how it needs to go...I'm still working on this part and will update once I have it squared away but after looking at the two harnesses, I'm a bit confused and will def need to grab the wiring diagrams and trace the wires.

There was a couple small differences between the shaft/stick portion of the two stalks and that is that the new one has more of an upward angle on it than the original one and is possibly a tad bit shorter. The possible slightly shorterness doesn't bother me--it should be basically the exact same on the T4R--but the slightly more upward angle really bothered me aesthetically, as the default/off position of the wiper switch one did not match the upward angle on the other side now. So, I figured, well, maybe I can use the wiper switch stalk from the same years Celica...nope, its got a rear-wiper...so perhaps some other Toyota model has one that will work...so I dug deeper and then found that the non-fog light switch stalk from the Celica also fit a handful of other Toyota vehicles and one of them is the 1999-2001 Camry, which I knew doesn't have the rear wiper. Again tracked one down on ebay (actually listed on ebay as from a '99 Avalon, but supposedly fit the same years Camry...) and from the images, it looked like it'd fit the bill. So I ordered it up, and Voila!, it fit right in, plugged right in, works perfect, and has the same upward angle. Sweet!

At this point, as stated earlier, I'm still working on the actual fog light wiring but I think I'm going to have to track down the wiring diagrams for each the Celica and the Tacoma and figure out where the differences are and whether or not the fog lights would still need the PIAA relays in line (I'm thinking yes).

    Anyway, part numbers:
    • 84140-20560 - 07/1998-07/1999 4runner headlight combination switch/stalk with fog (also fits 08/1995-05/1996 celica)
    • 84652-2G011 - 08/1999-06/2001 Camry wiper switch/stalk
And the pics, original Tacoma switch/stalks, vs the new ones I used, how it looks from driver position with the new switches, and the old vs new wire harnesses:

Looks awesome brother. Love seeing that you did it with factory Toyota parts... Stealthy:thumbsup:
This is going onto my list, I'll start acquiring the parts.

still unsure if I will add fog lights to my truck, but if I do, I'd do this mod :)

I really like the fact it's factory toyota parts

@digitalferg What were the wires you ran to the stalk, I see 3 additional wires. Wondering if you got this figured out yet?

Damn, well I have the part # at least. I'll try to continue it when I have time.

So, has anyone successfully accomplished this? I would love to do this and not have an extra button on the dash.

I like the idea of this implementation but I ended up buying an OEM fog switch to use in one of the panel blanks. Not the most ideal by comparison, but much simpler and I typically only run for fogs a few times a year and my 1st Gen isn't a daily.

Ah darn, I was hoping you'd figure out the wiring so I could copy your work.

I finished this mod yesterday and it is working very nicely. A thanks to digitalferg for the part #s. I already have a new stalk that did not work from my first failed attempt.

Here is how I wired the switch up.

    Switch wiring.

    Fog Light SW Wiring (1).jpg

This diode circuit illuminates the High Beam indicator in the Combination Meter when the offroad lights are on.

    Fog Light SW Wiring (2).jpg

Back side of the switch. The two brown wires are the fog switch, pins 10 & 11.

    Fog Light SW Install (1).jpg

My wiring harness did not have pins 10 & 11. I removed the brown wires from the connector housing and made a free hanging connector.

    Fog Light SW Install (2).jpg

This is the relay I used. It is a 10A opto-isolated relay I found on Amazon. My offroad lights are LED and only draw 7A. I hear no inductor kick in the sound system when turning the offroad light on and off.

    Fog Light SW Install (4).jpg

This the interconnect cable from the Combo SW to the relay. The exposed end of the wire was soldered. Otherwise it fit loose in the wire tap.
I could have saved a lot of time just hard wiring it all together, but servicing later is harder.

    Fog Light SW Install (3).jpg

Relay placement on the right side of the steering column.

    Fog Light SW Install (7).jpg

Combo SW, interconnect and ground wiretap on the left side.

    Fog Light SW Install (6).jpg

Finished. Be sure to leave slack in the wires going into the dash. The wires tug back and forth when the steering column is moved up and down.

Thanks a lot for accomplishing this! I really appreciate you taking the time to do this, and to tell us how you did it.

Quick question, and probably a dumb one, but the red and blue wires are for the lights, correct? What if I had some lights that needed more amps?

Yes, the blue wire is always hot and is connected to the 10A fuse. The red wire is the load (offroad lights).
I used a switched hot wiring vs Toyota switched ground so I could illuminate the High Beam indicator.
You can change the relay to 12V 40A relay with a built-in diode for high amp lights. Just increase the fuse amperage and wire gauge.
