Whoosh.... Point is, why do people say only run 5w-30? Or 10w-30? And Mobil 1 5w-30 breaks down too quickly? Hahahaha. Spend some time at bitog.com or have your 'broken down Mobil 1 5w-30' analyzed. It may run out of TBN at 9k-10k miles. It's likely not many of you are running it that long. Maybe clay meant 5w-30 Mobil 1 tends to run on the thinner side of the viscosity scale compared to other 5w-30's? I had my Mobil 1 0w-40 analyzed from my oil change with 7k miles just a few days ago. Wear metals were excellent and there was still TBN left. I could've gone another 1k-2k and been just fine. Engine has 190k. Please spend some time reading and learning the why's and how's on engine oil. The beauty of it is that it isn't rocket science. Bobistheoilguy.com is an amazing resource.

Edit: corrected my shallow, closed minded, guarantee of nobody running their oil 10k. Thanks 98tacoma.

Why do people put oil in there engines that the engineers at toyota who designed the whole motor tell you not to use, sorry but im almost positive that they know 10x more about how our engines work than anyone online and they say use 5w-30 or 10w-30. Use what they say and dont start crap about it.

A page from the FSM for a Land Cruiser Prado (4Runner) from outside of the US with the 3RZ. I'm only trying to help people think about it logically. It's okay to improve or modify suspension components Toyota engineers used in the design but taboo to upgrade to a better oil than they originally put in?

I run Mobil 1 over 20k (basically yearly change) on 4.7 V8 with over 260k miles without issues.

20k on the oil before you change it? Is it the EP Mobil 1? Ever had an analysis done? That's got to be getting close to the end of the TBN.

And by the way everyone, I'm not saying to not run the 5w-30 or the 10w-30. All I'm saying is there are other recommendations on oil weight from Toyota in other parts of the world that don't have CAFE standards implemented on them as we do here. So if someone says I run 0w-30 or 15w-50, Toyota does in fact recommend those weights outside of the US. No need to bag on someone if they follow a recommendation on oil weight by Toyota for these engines outside of the US.

I did years ago. I'll see if I can locate it. It had over 30k on that run. Not sure about the EP but I'll check tonight.

Up until my last oil change I've used Mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30. Many times the extended performance. In 2010 I sent a sample of oil in with 5,500 miles on it and was told I could take it to 6,500 - 7,500 miles. My last oil change I switched to Red Line 5w-30. After about 5,000 miles I will change it and send it in to be analyzed.

I should add that I originally used the extended performance Fram oil filters during that first oil sample. Several years ago I switched to K&N oil filters and the sample I took this last summer came back better then when I was using the Fram filter. I didn't get the TBN analyzes done so I don't know how many more miles of life the oil had left in it. I will be getting the TBN done when I send in the Red Line sample.

Perhaps a separate thread should be started where everyone posts up their oil analyzes so everyone can compare REAL numbers.

If you're even asking about oil you probably care about your vehicle more than 90% of drivers and have nothing to worry about because it likely gets changed on time or too soon.

The people who really need to worry about the "best" oil are the ones who don't give a damn about their cars. Funny how that works!

Good idea but it's completely subjective to many factors such as driving habits and climate so it wouldn't stand for much in the realm of science.
