I'm no doctor but I'm fixin to revive this thread. Agree with most everything that's been said already. Y'all gotta check out Blackberry Smoke. They're Georgia boys, started out with some good country stuff but later took a lot of influence from Lynyrd Skynyrd and did a pretty good job of bringing back the near extinct genre of Southern Rock. Here's one of my favorites:
    https://youtu.be/3BTqAkJMUGE
Other good ones are Pretty Little Lie, Let Me Help You Find the Door, and Bottom of This. Honestly it's all good I just didn't want to list everything. Thanks for all the artist suggestions!

It you go back to when it was called country and western, it was a tradition. Grand old opry. You had to fit the mold to get the air play. Back then singles on the juke box was what they used to sell records. The LP' had that one hit from the jukebox and the rest was filler. Record company executives decided who was gonna get signed and had writers on staff that wrote just for that artist.
Fast forward to today talent and you tube or a spot on the voice will take you far.

I totally agree on the point of some lame ass talent show propelling folks to stardom. But through out the history of C&W there are points in time when the old timers would say that's not country. David Alan Coe, Waylon Jennings, Charlie Daniels all these are examples of people that are now considered Legends of country music but when they first came out people said "that ain't country". I would say 60-75% of today's country would fit the format of just about any top 40 pop station.

    Fan.

Would play it at my Pardi for sure.

    :notsure:

The dude is awesome. He is, though, a modern country artist even with his more true to the roots style. Don't forget Garth Brooks, George Strait, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash all dabbled in the current flavors of pop country either directly or in a duet.

Tim McGraw is much the same, though less classically inclined. He did a song with Nelly, a rapper. Brad Paisley did the same with LL Cool J just a few years back. As long as someone isn't putting that shit out, fine by me!

I have seen Prine live so many times, even got his autograph after the show, had to hold his left over pizza so he could sign my ticket stub. The man can make you cry and laugh all in one song.

Prine and Emmylou used to be played on rock stations when I was a kid. Texas radio in the '70s might be Foghat, then Willie.

I found an old mixtape cassette that I recorded the entire Rush 2112 onto and caught part of a very country sounding Bruce Cockburn song. I miss REAL radio that they played whatever they felt like. Or you requested......anybody remember that?

yall gotta check out cody johnson if he hasn't been mentioned yet, hes younger, and a newer artist but he seems to draw his influence from older music... I'll post some of my favorite songs later. for now check out "cowboy like me" and "wild as you"

Country music has split into so many sub-genres now it's crazy. Wish corporate radio would be better at playing them all instead of the same top 40 every 3 hours.

I've recently discovered "hick hop". Wasn't sure at first but it is growing on me. LACs, Big Smo and Mocassin Creek are decent.

Still not a Luke Bryan fan but FGL is growing on me.

Red Dirt music is a whole other world to discover. Love everything Hayes Carll has ever done.
