How long for diff locker to fully engage?

    How long does it take yours to fully engage. Mine flashes for a while. Then some time it's takes a while to turn off. I'll have to go forward and backwards

    I think it will start to engage and disengage quicker the more you use it.

    Mine engages when i push the button and disengages about 15-20 seconds after pushing the button again, note I've got 2025 miles on the taco so it's still fairly new. That's my 2 cents for what it's worth, hope it helps

    I try to use mine at least once every other week on a dirt road !! And Yes it works better the more you exercise it. I have 14500 miles on my OFF ROAD
    I most of the time just back up a few feet and the Light goes right off !!! I do the same with Crawl Control and Terrain Select (MTS). :thumbsup:

    If you have trouble engaging or disengaging the locker I've found turn the steering wheel left/right while creeping forward a few inches will help line up the components and set it. Practice in an empty parking lot and you'll see what I mean. I find this also helps with the 4lo to/from 4hi.

    The locker and the solenoid for 4x4 are physical items that need to engage. Toyota recommends engaging both at least once a month, and regarding the 4x4 (not the locker) driving in 4x4 10 miles a month. This helps keep the gears lubricated in the transfer case and works the solenoid out. As far as the locker, don't drive 10 miles with it on please :), but do indeed engage and disengage it once a month or so. This keeps the mechanisms from getting stuck over time from non-use.

    I know of at least 2 people who have had trucks for years without engaging 4x4, and when they went to do it, it wouldn't work. Off to the dealership they go. I consider it a maintenance item.

    However, regarding MTS and Crawl Control, those are computer driven programs and I don't really think it's needed to "exercise" them, seeing as they mainly use the computer and your brakes to perform a Brake Locking Diff, and your brakes will already be physically well used since you use them every time you get in the truck.

    I Agree !!! I am not and off roader at all, the most my truck sees is a dirt road now and then !! I just like to say I have used them ( Crawl Control/MTS):) now and then !!:thumbsup:

    The locker couod never engage if driving straight on a level paved road, or extremely quickly if you have a bunch of wheelspin. It could never disengage if you're doing the opposite (right-hand turn with the locker on, forever)

    Trick is, you need the wheels moving at different speeds until the two pieces that lock together line up, and then it'll click in. To turn off, you need no relative motion (or difference in force) between the two wheels.

    Over-simplified version:
    You're jamming a pin into a hole between two discs that are spinning at the same speeds your wheels are. Think about what you'd have to do to get that pin in and out.
