"Stock Muffler"

Hello Fellow First Generation Addicts,

My family has a 1999 Tacoma with the 3.4 V65, and a 5-speed transmission. It has never had any exhaust work done to it, and we have owned for almost 12 years now, and it now has 166,xxx miles on it. Do any of you know how long the stock mufflers last? How much longer should I expect it to go before I need to start thinking about replacing it? It just passed emissions last year with absolutely no issues.

On a side note, the Toyota 5VZ-FE 3.4 liter V6 engine is an incredible engine. In the 12 years my family has owned our Tacoma, we have never spent a dime of money on this engine other than routine maintenance.

Packing inside the mufflers wear out over time, but unless it rusts out there's no reason to ever replace it. It's not part of your emissions system, just controls sound.

 

What smmarine said, I replaced mine at around 150k but that's just cuz there was a hole in it (rust) if it still works and sounds normal then just roll with it. You can pass emissions with no muffler at all (might get yelled at for the noise though) lol
