Put the better driver in the Sport and it will come out ahead most every time.

I really-really-really wanted an ACOR Manual for my 17, I like the ATRAC system in the Off Road, I really don't care for the Sport so I basically had no choice but to go with a DCSBOR to get the Manual.

I run Toyo's - 10 ply - 235/85-16's - I must have a tire that will enable me to Chain-up all 4 wheels to climb snow and ice grades. Have MT's mounted on separate rims for Winter use....AT's the rest of the time. Crushed rock roads will puncture anything less. Clay/K7CR

i have a limited. no locker. 4hi and 4lo. off road in mostly 4hi and its done fine. i can keep up with everyone, it just depends on clearance.
im on a 3inch lift and A/t tires tho. depends how good you can drive. crawl control doesnt always work, its more like a gimmick imo

I think you just need to ask yourself if you need a rear locker or not. If you don't really know much about it then you probably won't need it. Go with the Sport... it looks better!

You'll be amazed at what a stock Tacoma can do!

When you need a rear locker, you'll know. It'll be about the tenth time you have to stack rocks / dig out / self-recover when you have power going to the two wheels (one front, one back) that don't have any traction, while the wheel with tons of traction under it just sits there laughing at you...

Until that point... save your money. Don't let the "parrots" here tell you that you can't leave your driveway without a locker.

Yes and no. There's a lot of higher difficulty trails in Colorado/Moab that you'll need a locker for...but I wouldn't say crawl control is needed. Lots of people have gotten by and still get by without crawl control.

You do realize that on a sport you don't have the two wheels spinning the truck uses engine power and braking sending power to the wheels with most traction so basically it is just as capable

I don't have a 3rd gen, but I found the ATRAC in my 13 OR has seen more use than the locker. Atrac only works at low crawling speed, but has been great at minimizing wheel spin and keeping the truck moving forward. Plus you can leave it on when in 4lo and still be able to make those tight turns. My truck is far from stock now, but it took me pretty far even in stock trim with very little drama. This trail is much steeper than it looks in the video.

Also, I have crawl control in my 4Runner trail, and never use it.

Sports have TRAC, off roads have ATRAC which is much more aggressive. Not quite as capable.

on a sport it's only in the rear. The OR is front and rear traction control (atrac) or rear locker and front traction (atrac) control. Yes it is a big difference. No crawl contol here on my 2nd gen went from a sport to an OR because I do wheel more than I expected I would. A Normal trail a sport will absolutely get by, Harder trails a locker is definately needed. I absolutely am able to go more places than I did with my sport. My OR now with the same parts swapped over. @Hugopreston has a 3rd gen sport and has wheeled with me and with smaller tires he can tell you places he struggled and I walked right up. I have videos I will try to put up and show you but I'll have to dig through my go pro footage tomorrow. Someone remind me lol

Edit: when I get the videos pulled up note that my tires were 265/70/17 bfg's and I don't know what brand his are but they are 285's.

That's good for the 3rd gen sports then. The 2nd gen OR has a bigger brake booster than the sport because of the atrac. I will admit I don't know much about the 3rd gens.

I don't want to say your completely wrong because we(my girlfriend) just got our first 3rd gen today. But I'm pretty sure that's why the OR has all the extra brake boosters and modules for the abs

No worries the braking system is stronger on the off-road but not as much as last gen plus I'm 99% sure my front and rear work with traction control I could
Be wrong but I've used it and swore it was working both
