    Hello,

I have a newbie question about wheels, specifically about SCS SR8s. I would prefer not to bother Vin as he has already responded to a couple of emails from me.

I am going to purchase a 2017 Tacoma Sport. I would like to put the SR8 on the stock tires (I am already spending a lot for the truck but hate the stock wheels...). Can anyone explain to me if this is a wise choice with regard to handling and safety for my truck? I get conflicting reports from friends about the safety aspect of aftermarket wheels. One person even told me that most wheel shops wont break the bead on stock tires to install new wheels because it can really compromise your setup.

Also, it seems like any photos of SR8s on Tacoma World show the wheels with aftermarket tires as well. It is hard for me to envision the look and stance on my truck without seeing stock tires. Does anyone have pics of stock tires on SCS wheels or any other aftermarket wheels?

If I decide to go with an aftermarket tire for the SR8, can anyone suggest what is an ok tire size that will require no other modifications to the truck?

I really appreciate anybody who responds to this.

SCS makes their wheels for specifically for Toyota's, no issue regarding quality and fitment there. I have yet to hear anything negative about the quality of their wheels.

Your factory tires are 265/65R17 which will fit onto a 17"x8.5" wheel.

The reason why you typically see their wheels with aftermarket tires is due to the fact that the way that wheel fits it sticks out ~2" more than stock. On a non-lifted stock Tacoma this will most likely cause some rubbing issues due to moving the wheel further out.

Stock wheels are 17"x7.5" with a +30mm offset, the SCS SR8 is 17"x8.5" with a -10mm offset, that change in width and offset is what moves the wheel further out. Reason for this is more clearance for a larger tire and on a lifted truck it widens the stance to aid in stability from lifting the center of gravity.

As for the dismount of your tires and putting them on new wheels, I've never heard of a shop not doing it. I'd call around to a few different shops and ask their policy regarding new wheels with your current tires.

    You're welcome
If you are still shooting for the SR8 wheels do a little homework on fender trimming and the cab mount chop (CMC). Or if you're leaning towards a different wheel, 17"x8" with 0mm offset will fit better. About flush with the fenders and no rubbing issues. Sticks out about ~1.4" over stock.

    Little stuff. Nothing special.
I'm having some very similar concerns and questions about upgrading from the stock 2017 TRD Sport wheels. I also dislike them.

The factory wheel offset of 30mm is really hard to find in other wheels. I see a lot more 18, 12 and 0 offsets. I don't want to cut anything or modify the truck in anyway. I just want some better looking wheels.

When looking at other factory Tacoma OEM wheels some have much lower offsets. One was even 4mm. I just don't understand how my oem rims are 30mm and others are 4mm. I've gotten the impression that if I put the wheels with a 4mm offset on my truck then there will be rubbing? It is there another factor in this I'm missing? Looking at the last post I get the impression that the tire width can also play into this? So a lower offset is okay if the tire width is greater than the OEM 7.5? Sorry, I'm really new to all of this but have been doing some research. Trying to learn this all before I make a purchase.
