Anytime I show from D to S it always says 4. Even on highway it's like I'm never in 5 or 6

The one I got to test drive going up a long hill and trying to maintain about 60 mph it could not make up its mind, it was like 6-5-4-5-6-5-4-5-6-5-4-5-6-5-4-5-6-5-4 and so on and so on.

When you put it in S, it automatically takes you out of the 2 over drive gears 5 and 6 and drops you into 4th.

    Thats what I figured

That doesn't mean your not in 5th or 6th. Everytime you slide it over into "S" it drops to 4th gear

Lol, maybe you have coolant in your Transmission that destroyed your overdrive clutches.

Guy's it's not this confusing. S4 means you will not go into 5th or 6th...S4 means 4th gear is the highest gear allowed. Each number selected is the highest allowed gear and if used sequentially, allows some manual control over the transmission.

Have you tried up-shifting? I haven't driven mine a lot yet but I have the opposite issue on the freeway. It feels like it's trying to hold a good gear for MPG and I have to mash it to downshift. The computer hasn't had much chance to learn my lead footed driving style yet I believe.

Who would have thought the new thing in 2017 is having to be in "sports" mode for simple driving on non-level roads....

It amazes me people making threads complaining about the truck just because they don't know how to operate it and don't look at their manual first. I guess reading is a hard thing to do.

i had a dude argue me down in the "what have you done to your 3rd gen today" thread about the way S mode works. he insisted it was like a manual transmission without a clutch. if it's shifting exactly when you shift the stick up, then you are either shifting at the exact moment the computer thinks it needs to OR you are shifting later than the computer thinks it needs to (which may not be a bad thing if you are trying to stay in the lower gear longer)..... but regardless, there is no way to lock it into a higher gear than you need.

i mostly use s mode for going downhill and not having to hit the brakes much or slowing down when a slow poke pulls out in front of me.

It still sucks people have to put it in a particular mode to get a better driving experience instead of just throwing that lever in drive and and having no worries like any other truck.

Ever since the transmission TSB, mine shifts pretty good. I rarely ever use s mode.

I just throw that lever in drive and drive the truck with no worries.

I'll have them do whatever TSB version is current when I go in for my 5K service in a few weeks, but haven't felt any need to make a special trip.

Just because some number of forum participants have a problem and are vocal about it is no indication that their problem or their feelings about that applies to everyone.
