    Look fine to me.

I always know I'm proud of a weld when I think it's a shame to have to coat it with paint:)

    Lots of undercut.

Was late last night after work I decided I would weld them up. Was pausing at the bottom more and sweeping the top.

Hey there. I just invested in a weld machine so that I may teach myself the art of welding. It is a Millermatic 35. I tried it out in the guys shop that I bought it from, and it welder beautifully. Currently I am lacking 220v in the shop, a welding hood, and gas bottle. I plan on installing 50 amp service in the shop, stopping by the local weld supply to talk about renting a small bottle of Ar/co2 mix. One thing I don't know much about is the welding hoods. I know I want an auto darkening hood, I just don't know which I should go with as far as brand. I don't think I should go with Harbor Freight as I wouldn't trust the safety of my eye sight with that. Anyone recommend a fairly inexpensive auto darkening hood that is of good quality? I don't mind having it shipped, I am still at least a week away from installing the power to the shop. I appreciate y'alls helpful input. Oh and a pic of the machine just for reference.WP_20170129_12_39_55_Pro.jpg

I also started welding not too long ago. Didn't want to spend hundreds on a welding helmet so I purchased this one after reading reviews. It's worked flawlessly for me. But maybe some of the more experienced guys will be able to steer you in the right direction.

The HF hood is just fine. I've used them for years.

Amazon had one that is very highly rated as well.

Do you need 50 amps for that machine? All my Miller welders are fine on 30 amps.

I just don't feel I can trust HF with my safety. The welder is rated at 26 amps, but I plan on a larger compressor eventually as well.

    Just trying to save money.

Welders are rated different according to the welding code book.

Go to Miller Welds and Down Load the users Manual for your Millermatic 35

I see lots of people using Cheap Auto Dark Hoods !!

The most expensive hood if it does not have a comfortable headgear soon becomes the guest hood

Wear a Hood for 10 hours a day that becomes important

If your wearing safety glasses under your hood and have the correct cover plates getting flashed is no worse then turning on a light in a dark room

If your wanting to run a welder and a Compressor do you plan to run a separate breaker for each??

I plan on downloading the manual to my shop computer.

So you're saying cheap hoods are ok?

When you say safety glasses, you mean regular clear, or another type?

I plan on running one circuit in to the shop and when I need either the welder or the compressor, I will just plug one or the other in. Or I suppose I could run 60amp wire in, then split it to two separate boxes. Doubt Ill ever run the compressor and welder at the same time, at least won't load them both at the same time.

    Question.

Is the shop separate from house?

Did you know how to run a sub panel?

No offence, but I get the feeling that you don't understand electrical real good.

As for the auto shade helmets, the difference in a HF and a expensive model is only the speed of change.

HF claims to be 45,000 thousands of a second, a Miller Elite claims 55,000 thousands of a second. Neither is faster than the speed of light.

Fabrication advice needed: I need to make (grind/file) the exposed end of the pipe perfectly perpendicular to the hub axis of the wheel it's welded to. Assume I only have the most basic of metal tools. Thanks!

If I had access to a metal lathe that would be ideal. All I have is an angle grinder and some files.

Shop is actually garage, below the house, but attached.

No need for a sub panel, I have 6 more spaces in my current panel.

I'm no electrician, but running wire isn't too difficult.

Then just run 1, 240v circuit. You won't have any trouble putting 2 plugs on that 1 circuit. I actually have my plasma cutter, air compressor and welder on one circuit. I've never tripped the breaker.

If the compressor kicks in while welding or cutting with the plasma cutter, i just stop until compressor kicks off.

I have 30amp breakers on all my circuits. No issues at all.

Find a way to keep the wheel spinning and use your angle grinder with a flap disc? Kind of the same idea as a lathe.
