I am bored, and need a break from school stuff. (my brain hurts)
So.. I've decieded that after almost highjacking someone else's build, I'd do it in my own..

    Kinda an impromptu write up for first aid kits;

If you are looking for a good first aid kit, build it to your skill set. That being said, get a Tourniquet. A good one, not the cheepy ones, if you need recommendations on those I can link to what I have.

    Additionally:
    • a small sterile water
    • a few different rolls of gauze
    • trauma sheers (can cut a penny and denium but not flesh... usually)
    • Box of multi size band aids
    • neosporine or your choice of anti-nasty stuff
    • meds - Advil, tylenol, loperamide, benadryll - all good meds to have with you, and invest in the small zip locks (dime bags) this way you can buy a large supply and not have to spend $5.00 to refil those cute little packs you can get at a wawa or 7/11
    • Saline - If you have access, saline syringes are perfect for this kinda thing, if not, a bottle will do, if needed to rinse out eyes or a wound, you "spike" the lid with the tip of a knife and rinse like an emergency eye shower
    • If you purchase a "kit" know what is in it, and where it is at all times.
I moved the major items I have in stock to the rear molle panel pouches on my driver's back seat.

I also have a small kit that was given to me a years ago. It's come in handy not only for storage of small things like medications, safety pins (excellent for splinter removal and making limb slings).
The kit is something similar if not in fact this one : http://www.ems.com/amk-ultra-0.7-scout-first/1309379.html#start=22

While I do have the big green bag, which is larger bulk EMS supplies, the small pouch on my drivers seat contains items that get used a lot on an ambulance and in wound treatment. And typically is my go to first item.

I'll upload photos to this post tomorrow as its 00:30 currently.

But I kinda wanted to do a write up on something I knew. Since I've been feeling a bit... useless on the last few mod days, other then providing comical relief, and probably frustration with my numerous questions. I will likely also expand on this later as I gather more things, use and discover new items that would be good for those with little to no medical knowledge who need something quick to get them outta shit's creek.

Just picked up my Coax from @Paint6it9black today, seems I was on the right track with where and how I want to install it, as he has his done the same way..
Lemme get the full length of what I have typed up and we can go from there.

Ok, so last night was a bit informal, apperently it was a good idea, as I discovered some things I have not replaced since use that I spoke about.

So lets get started. On the rear of my drivers seat I have a Blue Ridge Overland molle panel that houses 3 pouches, 1 for shooting - ears and eyes, 1 for technical rescue pocket guides and the last, medical equipment that I deemed somewhat more essential then the rest of my gear. I also keep my Stethoscope right there, as I tend to use that frequently running calls from the fire house. (Please note that a steth is not an essential item, though I did include it in the photographs). Quite a few of the items are a bit advanced that I keep with me, up to an IV kit, this has been in my kit since Medic school, and will likely remain there as I can still start an IV in my sleep. I do not recommend or suggest that anyone unless certified to do so, carry one.

    IMG_0097.jpg

    Molle Pouch Items:
    • Quick Clot ACE - large
    • NAR Saline Lock Kit (IV kit)
    • Quick Clot Sport - Small, easy to replace
    • Emergency Bandage similar to an Israeli bandage
    • (2) 4x4 Gauze pad - CVS
    • Gauze roll - tight weave
    • Tourniquet -(Avoid CAT tourniquets, they suck..unless you have experience and you prefer that kind....they still suck) http://www.liveactionsafety.com/sof...vPGpGynJ-HjBiI9JIKQ1qjeSGa_f8JtAOkaAlYC8P8HAQ
    • Dermabond - Excellent stuff for when stitches wont work... this was a hospital supplied one that I never used.
    • Saline Flush
    • 2" gauze roll - tight weave (better for direct application to wounds)
    • 2" gauze roll - large weave (better for holding gauze pads onto a head wound or odd location: ie. elbow's, knees etc.
    • (1) 2" gauze rolls (sealed)

The small kit I spoke of last night that can be purchased from Eastern Mountain Sports is what needs some updating. I originally liked it because the two pouches inside of it were water proof, they have since ripped and are no longer water tight, but then again, this pouch is probably older then 5 years. It needs some updating but here is what is included in that kit currently, some of it is original items others have been replaced:

    IMG_0108.jpg

Pictured above is the kit, LifeStraw and a small empty flask that can be used to store water if need be.

These are the two pouches it came with inside, I've also thrown in a roll of medical tape and a 5x9 Abdominal Pad, the abdominal pads are great for larger cuts that are still bleeding.

    IMG_0109.jpg

    Pouch 1:
    • Cloth tape
    • plastic horribly crappy tape I hate
    • sealed small amount of gauze
    • Duck tape
    • tweezers
    • 3 safety pins
    • horrible roll of ace wrap *
    • (2) 3x3 gauze pad
    • (1) 3x4 gauze pad
    • Misc. Band aids
    • Butterfly bandaids
    • Alcohol swab stick
    • (2) 2x2 gauze pads
    IMG_0110.jpg

    Pouch 2:
    • (5) "After cuts & Scraps - antiseptic - anesthetic wipe
    • (3) Triple antibiotic ointment
    • Ibuprophen
    • After Bite swab wipe thing.. (never used it, not my favorite one)
    • Ziplock bag with Bio hazard sticker and 1 pair of medical gloves.
    IMG_0111.jpg

Those items all came with the kit, except the tape and abdominal pad. Most of the gauze items can be purchased at a CVS, don't go crazy, I believe they can also be purchased at CVS as individuals.
Medical gloves, if needed can be given to the EMS crew once they arrive, there are plenty of videos on how to properly remove the gloves to avoid cross contamination.

I do have a much larger bag, stock full of random different equipment, not anything you really need to have as just a basic first aid kit on your trucks. My large bag is more a First In bag, designed for use by EMTs. I have the unfortunate luck of stumbling across accidents, with all the driving I do, so myself and the few medics I worked with narrowed down every thing I would need, with the exception of an AED.

Alright, so lets discuss this stuff.

Betadine: I've never carried it in any of my personal first aid kits, as well, we don't carry it on the boo-boo buses. Scratch that, it may be in our Trach kits. I can't recall, I believe 1 of the 4 I worked on may have had it in their kits. It's good, but like I said, no personal preference to it, and it's never been in any of my kits. Usually Alcohol swabs work just as well for what we are looking for in reguards to first aid kits.

Peroxide: I stopped using this stuff years ago, on wounds at least. Only because I found wounds didn't heal as well as they would with just a solid cleaning with Gold soap. Also had more significant scarring when I used peroxide. Now I do still have it in the house, for cleaning ears, but alcohol works just as well.

See previous post for the rest!

Liz, this is great info and deserves its own thread.
    Perhaps in the off-road subforum?

Dude... scars are cool... chicks dig them..

I however don't dig other chicks and don't need any additional ammunition scaring away the dudes.

    I too use Rum.

But usually just the packets of alcohol swabs work good.
