Why not? It's a good discussion.

    Why not?

Also, 3500 pounds is the towing capacity of... 5 lug (4-cyl), xrunner (6-cyl), prerunner (4-cyl), prerunner (6-cyl), 4x4 (4-cyl), and 4x4 (6-cyl). Obviously except when specifically equipped from factory with "tow package".

Now you just try to tell me that all of those configurations I listed are logically equivalent (in terms of towing)....

And yet, they all have the *exact* same tow capacity.

That is probably the funniest thing I've read in this thread..
The R15x transmissions are about the last thing you ever need to worry about breaking. The Tacoma 2TR-FE engine is probably the smallest engine that has ever been coupled to one of these transmissions. Previous Tacoma used the R15x transmission behind the V6, **including with supercharger**. Jeep used to use it behind the I6-258 and I6-242 with around 225 footpounds of torque (compared to 181 on this Toyota). They called it the "AX-15".

Also one more thing... WHERE IS **ANYBODY** talking about "redlining" the engine?

I believe MA law on trailer brakes is anything that weighs 10,000 lbs or more when unloaded needs them. Which to me is nuts. I wouldn't want to have anything behind me over about 3000 lbs without brakes!

    Well, MA is obviously nuts.
According to http://www.towshop.com/trailer_supplemental_braking_laws.htm -- most seem to be at 3000 or less. Some as low as 1000, and some completely out of their minds.

On top of that, something which *may or may not be enforceable*, the vehicle itself should have some guidelines specifying at which weight it is necessary to add trailer brakes.

You're late to the party, and your message, which has been repeated MANY times, is irrelevant.

I think a lot of that engine, but I am not familiar with the 5 speed trans. it is mated to.I have had a couple of trucks where the trans was the weak spot and the tow limit was strictly based on the trans. How stout are the guts of that 5 speed compared to the 6sp in the v6?

I couldn't tell you much about the 6-speed. I've heard that there were some weaknesses in the early versions of it, but which have since been fixed up. I haven't heard of them failing catastrophically, just stupid things like synchronizers wearing out prematurely.

The 6sp suffers from syncro and engine software issues that make it difficult to shift smoothly.
It has no strength issues to speak of for towing.
