I know 1/4" plate has become the standard metal thickness for winch tubs on off-road bumpers giving them the ability to handle even 12,000 pound winches (or even larger maybe?). Knowing this, would 3/16" steel be thick enough for a 8,500 or 9,000 pound winch?

I am getting a new welder this coming up weekend and I am thinking of making my own based on the style of the US OffRoad winch mount (with some changes). The idea of saving some weight (and some money) really appeals to me, and if 3/16" will for a 9,000 pound winch I would rather go that route.

    Thanks for any responses.

Negligible weight difference. You will only save 2.5 pounds per square foot of material going from 1/4 to 3/16.....is it really worth it?

Taking a leak before getting in your truck will probably save more weight.
