Saw it on there this morning. Looked like a great trip.

Our group has that area planned for this upcoming April/May. Really looking forward to it.

MT stuff, RTT stuff, the usual.
How were the roads / trails up that way? I've shot out to the south rim in my prerunner, prob should have had a second vehicle since I'm not 4WD but it is what it is I guess.

I plan on doing this trip in may. Any advice on how to prepare for it and what to expect would be greatly appreciated!

Spring would be awesome, especially since the trails would be tamer and weather a bit more manageable. Have fun!

In better weather, most of the trails are pretty mild. Even in slick mud/clay we mostly did the entire route mainly in 2WD due to gas mileage considerations, and even then we didn't stay in 4WD very long. With good tires and the right time of year (not summer rain season or winter ice/storm season, you should be fine if you stick to the main trails. Some of the side trails will be a bit more tricky.

Plan for everything. Gas, water, food, recovery gear are not to be taken for granted on any trip- not just this one. I mapped out the entire route beforehand, charted out mileage between gas stops, etc. The longest stop between gas was about 360ish miles on dirt (my range per tank is about 275ish on dirt), so carrying extra fuel was a must. If you're planning on a shorter trip, you may get away with not relying on extra fuel, but you should bring it.

If traveling through the National Forest sections of the North Rim, bring a chainsaw or handsaw at the minimum. Fortunately @jAndyMendo bought his, as we hit a downed bundle of trees in the middle of the trail that would've thrown a wrench into our gas considerations (doubling back was not a good option) had we needed to turn around. We used the chainsaw about 3 times the entire trip, and winched the 4th one away without cutting.

If you go through the spring or summer, you may see more folks on these trails vs. the early winter season when we went. The trails may be a lot better that time of year.

    Have fun!

    Thanks man.
Were there any permits required to enter or camp in the national forest or the canyon?

I posted this up in another thread, should help you out. General rule, no permits required on BLM or NF lands, no burn restrictions either (at least, at the time we went). GCNP has 100% burn ban year round on all park lands.
