Its common practice when welding a thin piece of metal to a thick piece..

I pre heated the set of 2nd gen spindles i did. Holding up great.

It is done for 1st gens too as they are cast

I'm confused as to why they would set a time and place to meet and then not be there

Yup. I feel as if this whole thing is one big miscommunication...

I feel bad for you tetton, can only imagine being in your exact shoes right now.

Nonetheless, still very nice of them to go out of their way to help.

Yeah it's possible that thermal cycling from all the short beads fatigued it.

no you didn't miss anything. Its not listed in the instructions. I was also reading them earlier.

Lets see if I can explain this without confusing the shit out of anyone haha

Our spindles are forged, not cast like most people think so preheating is not a requirement like it would be on a cast steel but it does help. Essentially when you're welding the spindle is a much thicker material than the gusset and is going to act as a heat sink drawing heat away during the welding process which equates to uneven cooling on the weld. If the spindle is preheated the heat transfers evenly between the 2 materials and the weld is able to cool evenly and properly.

From your picture it looks like part of the weld off the upright broke awhile ago and finally let go recently. A stock spindle is going to have some play and flex which is why they are more suseptable to bending not breaking, but with the gusset on there you made the entire upright rigid and now any force or flex was centered at the point of failure where the weld had already failed.

Yeah, thats a possibility, I recall using lowish heat when I welded it, that may have worked against me if a lower section of the weld failed. Which created a damaged spot on the spindle allowing the failure.

What temp would you heat one of these up to before welding and what would your cool down process be?

I heated mine up until you could feel it throwing off a ton of heat. Cool down was just letting it sit in ambient temperature after welding.

I doubt he'll have to worry about vandalism where it's at.

Why do the callsigns have the -# attached to the end?

Also, are not all radios capable? I'm not a very good ham.

No I wasn't worried about it. I had plans of going back next weekend, I woke up this morning and saw people already went up to fix it and pooped myself.

no, and seeing that they are operating on Weatherman which is a big Desert Racing channel and not a traditional HAM or 2M frequency I would guess that tracking may be an option on the radios but not receiving messages. But I have no idea
