I've got a 1986 4Runner ( I know not a Tacoma ) with the 22R-TE but am having trouble figuring out which model transmission these run, I am also under the impression that these run a stronger rear diff set up as well? Sorry for the ignorance in asking about this but I'm used to Jeeps and I'm new to the Toyota side but I hear that these setups can be highly sought after for Tacoma builds as well just needing some insight as to the truth behind it.

Sorry I don't have any answers to your questions, but I wouldn't mind seeing some pics of the unicorn. I've only actually seen one in person(years ago)and I thought someone just put different emblems on it thinking they were cool :beavisd:

Bilstein 5100's w/ Eibach coil overs in front (set at 3" of lift). Front diff drop kit. Extended Bilstein 5100's in the rear. Deaver 2" AAL in rear w/ axle shims. 285 x 75 r 16 Goodyear Duratracks. Wheelers steelies type B, AFE cold air intake. Sway bar delete. All Pro Apex front bumper (rattle canned Rustoleum primer + flat black). Plasti-dipped emblems. Mud flaps removed.
I've got an 86 runner as well. Not the Turbo though. I would be surprised if they put a stronger rear diff set up in it as the turbo hardly added any power. Post updates if you find out though, I'm interested. Also I do have some knowledge about these old runners if you need any help let me know.

    R151F - Transmission
*Also this uses a stronger 23 spline vs. the ordinary 21 spline.
    "Turbo/V6" style - Rear Diff.
*Slightly larger bearing than 4cyl, housing has an extra rib brace.

Got a buddy that has an 87' 22RTE pickup.

Rear diff is the same as a 8" v6 diff, nothing changed. The transmission from the factory was a R151F. That set-up is pretty common, there's tons of them out there for sale.

I'm about to drop $1000 on an r151f, bellhousing, and transfercase.

The engine is kinda prone to problems with factory turbo.

Idk what it is if it's an automatic, bc they did run autos behind the 22rte

You’ve got the golden “r” series trans with the lower 4.3 1st gear and the geared transfer case. I envy you...

Looking back guys, I don't think the 4runner could come manual with the R151F. I think it was a pickup only transmission with the 22r turbo
