You MIGHT want to look into getting the Midland 75-822 CB? It can both be a "mobile" and a handheld. The only "space" that would really be taken is the glove box, center console, or whatever. Either way, it frees up your center console if you ever plan on putting something there instead of the CB. As far as an external, my brother uses a Cobra magmount and the setup works very well for his setup. He has a pretty nice Ford Explorer 4WD.

You can see the magmount and since this pic, he bought a roof carrier thing/rack and ziptied the base of the mount to it so to keep it from possibly moving although it never did. But anyways, it worked out very well.

Just something to keep in mind as a possible solution.

LOL, I can't stand not having CB or HAM, LMAO!!!

I have a 1st Gen Reg cab and I put my Yaesu FT-1900R where there used to be a "plastic pocket" located just above the ashtray where my CB is located, LMAO!!!

As far as cooling, just don't use the unit on MAX output power... constantly! Most mobiles have, at the very least, HIGH/LOW power settings just like the handhelds. Mobiles tend to be 10W and up in power level selectability. 10W, will get you pretty far out believe it or not!!! Also, the chassis for the radio is usually able to handle the lower end wattage output pretty good without having to worry about it. It is when you are on the MAX output wattage of the mobile is where it starts to get a bit sketchy depending on how long your TX's are and where the unit is located (air flow), ambient air temp (desert like conditions), etc.

What radio did you get, if you don't mind me asking? It might help me give you some ideas. I have a little bit of knowledge of the inside of a 2nd Gen. You plan on going magmount? Top center of cab is absolute BEST for a magmount!!! Just be aware that magmounts MAY HAVE a tendency to start "moving" depending on how you are driving your rig (i.e. high speed desert washes with those nasty whoops, for example). If you are more into "crawling", a magmount is absolutely fine.

Sorry to quote you again, but Baofeng makes a pretty nice compact 2m/70cm band mobile unit. BUT, I just don't know if you can go "off band" with them or need to "unlock" them to do such??????? The link below is an example of the unit that I am talking about:

    https://www.amazon.com/BTECH-MINI-UV-2501-Mobile-Radio/dp/B01EG5BVNE

LOL, didn't realize it had a fan on the back. In either case, I would still use the 25W power output only as necessary and in fairly short bursts. The radios will typically have a "thermal shutdown" to protect itself from a meltdown, LOL!!! Plus, keep in mind that you have to think about the depth of the radio as well. In this case, you want the depth to be as such so that the fan isn't being obstructed in any way, of course. Then, maybe after about 2yrs of use, take the radio out and make sure that the fan is still freely moving. Other than that, I plan to eventually get this particular unit myself. I was first introduced to this radio by @YotaGurlIAm Madison and @eccracer104 Mike and just fell in LOVE with how compact it is. There are other manuf that make the same/similar features, so I am not sure if they have this very same one??? In either case, it seems like a very nice unit indeed.

@Redfive11 LOL, please don't shoot me, LOL!!! OR you can always go this route with a cheaper handheld unit with a MIC and magmount setup. see the picture

I don't have a magmount for it as it is setup for something else in this particular picture, but it gives you an idea of where I am going. Just clip your HT (Hand Transceiver) to your seatcover or whatever you can clip to and have your MIC sitting right next to you. I just did a fairly recent trip with this similar setup and it worked out VERY WELL!!! If you buy the HT's that are 8W capable (they're usually tri-band radios... 1W, 4W, and 8W selectable) I would recommend getting the 8W as it gives you THAT much more output power, but at the expense of your battery pack typically taking a hit on draining faster due to the higher wattage setting, assuming you are constantly using the 8W selection?! I heard recently that Baofeng makes a battery pack backing that you can plug into your cig lighter port? If they do, I'm gonna eventually get me one of those as an option to have and save the battery packs for when I am "foot mobile" for whatever reason. Anyways...
    Denny_magAntenna_pic3.jpg

LOL, just pay no mind to the exposed wires, LMAO!!! Sorry for the pic being a bit grainy, but you can see where I mounted my Cobra CB and just above that is my 2m HAM. I had to make custom brackets for the HAM mount though. Again, my truck is a 1st Gen, so I don't know exactly what would be involved as far as brackets go though??? As far as placement, I can think of a few spots, but now thinking about THAT, I know there are different dash options??? :notsure:

I don't/can't run cuz of bad knees. I used to take a yoga class every week when I was living in Hawaii. I'm thinking about doing a month membership at core power yoga though and going a few times a week. Yoga is super good for you. I know @Thesandaddict is a yoga fan
