My son is wanting to take a few of his guns to CA as he will be there for several years. I'm pretty sure he will not be able to take his M1A as it was not a CA compliant model or S&W M&P 15-22. I'm fairly certain he can take his bolt action rifle and O/U shotgun with no problem. How about a colt 1911 rail model? Are there certain models of 1911s not allowed or can any model be had in the state?

Is there a list of specific weapons allowed and not allowed that makes it clear what can and can not enter the state? He already has a lot of guns and doesn't want to buy anything there.

    welcome to your kid!!

i live here, and i still get confused. everytime i have a question, i google the California Dept of Justice website. they have a link on the side that directs you immediately to the list of guns allowed. the laws are pretty easy to decifer, but not remember for me.

if your son is LEO or military, i think there is an exemption. i'm not sure, since it never applies to me, i skip over it.

i brought all my hunting rifles and O/U in without any fanfare.

    NO GO!
    Sorry my friend.
As far as transferring over title ships as registered the owners and the guns and different laws in States you would have to come here and go to the gun dealership and ask them

There is a test to own a handgun? Or is that just for CC?

Do bolt action rifles and O/U shotguns have to be registered with someone?

He is a Marine stationed at Pendleton. I have told him to go talk to the armory there to find out what he can and can not do, but he's 21 and who knows what he will really do. I won't let him take the guns if I'm not sure he can legally have them there.

He would need to fill out this form and submit it in. Is he planning to become a resident of california?

    https://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/agweb/pdfs/firearms/forms/ab991frm.pdf

His handguns are fine to bring in even if its off roster, his bolt actions and shotguns are okay to bring in also. Follow this flow chart, http://www.calguns.net/caawid/flowchart.pdf

Anything AR related or anything with a detectable magazine or pistol grip needs to be featureless before bringing it in to the state. check out calguns.net. They're are more knowledgeable people over there that can answer your questions better then we can.

There is no exemption for military. California has a process for military personnel bringing in "assault" weapons, however the system is broken and requires a letter from the members Commanding Officer stating the weapons are for duty use.

Moving out of cali because of the laws here. The guns laws blow also dmv and such is a nightmare. I have been bent over to register my new Tacoma, plus a license transfer awhile back for a cdl was crazy. I cant wait to get out of cali. Nevada is the next move.

The state of CA is able to so easily oppress gun owners and other followers of the constitution by making the laws so vague to the people they are trying to restrict to the point that we dont really know what exactly is legal and what is not. The AR platform is basically considered 'evil' at this point, and anyone that owns one must be watched and documented as they are potential deadly criminals.

Our senator, Kamela Harris, was recently interviews about the new restrictions of what they call 'assault weapons' (Ive never seen an assault weapon in my life). She was pressed to name the components the were being banned, such as a collapsable stock, flash hider, and muzzle shroud. When being pressed to what a muzzle shroud is, she finally said, its the "strap that you carry the rifle with over your shoulder".

    But I digress.

Check out calguns.net. Lots of talk on how fucked CA is, but a good resource and community. Group range days, etc. They have flow charts that will let you know if your gun is CA legal and why.

    CA Semiauto Ban(AW)ID Flowchart

    CA Handgun Ban ID Flowchart

How CA Laws Apply to/Affect Me

Honestly, you should advise your kid against coming to CA, Los Angeles and San Francisco are filthy dumps. Im trying to move out as ive seen the quality of life vs. cost of living here steadily get worse.

I wouldn't take too many guns if he's going to store them at an armory(outside of his possesion).

Why is the M1A not legal? Does it have a chassis with a pistol grip on it? Does it have a flash hider? If it's a standard M1A with wooden chassis, all he needs is to make sure it has a muzzle brake instead of a flash hider.

.22'lrs are on a separate class different than "assault weapons". As long as the barrel isn't under 16" he should be fine.

As far as pistols/handguns where the magazine is inserted on the grip, he needs to take it with him, take the California firearm safety test and register the gun. It's a form online that you print out and send with payment.
