Love everything about what @goblue82 and @Mach375 did.

But let's also be happy for @tetten , two great dudes came together to help him out and the thread is most about Mach and goblue.
tetten, glad your rig is rolling again!

@Mach375 your great at writing up reports, you should come up with some kinda book about all your adventures man. I'd certainly read it.

Glad this had a happy ending, I learned a lot reading. Also heightened my respect for the forum and members here.

But also DAMN this thread for making me want to get into HAM.

Maybe get spare spindles and make sure to weld the gussets on properly?

Happy to hear that all turned out well :)
 To all who contributed to Helping and those that couldn't be there but were there in spirit !
    I learned a lot here .

After thinking about my earlier post on weld procedure I would like to add an update as it was late and I was getting sleepy.

Since the spindles are forged , I don't think that much pre heat is necessary. Pre heat and stress relief is needed most on welds containing chrome. ( 9018 )
The wire used for welding on gussets would most likely be 70-S
Bringing the base metal up to 100-200* would be plenty. ( Stairgod mentioned 200* ) so he is correct on that.
Using KO wool for cool down would also not be necessary ( if shop temp is 60-70* ) but it wouldn't hurt and give some peace of mind.
I would weld one up , wrap it then work on the other.
I really don't believe that the welding was the cause of the failure.
I'd sure like to hear what the probable cause is as would all of us.

Anyway , lets hear a follow up. I'm going to do some fact finding.
    Great Read !!

You volunteering? Cuz I'd rather not see another sequel.
It's like a bad movie that won't die because of bad sequels.

hahaha no no no! I don't want a sequel (ok secretly I do since I know it will happen one day). I'd be happy to be part of a rescue though!

Ok , Sequel to weld procedure .....so just got off the phone with an excellent fabricator and friend of mine.
He recomended installing the gussets via MIG.
The reason is to keep the heat down .( Tig is much hotter ) Also , only stitch the welds and keep the heat as low as possible and still get penitration.
Cooling to fast would cause the metal to become brittle.
So , after stitching , heat the whole piece with a torch , wrap in KO wool and let cool slowly.
I'm referring to all all this being done in a shop ( or your kitchen table )
    at 60-70*
Can't do this in the cold

After seeing the recent 2 catastrophic failures of broken spindles I decided to put my junk up on the lift this morning to inspect the condition of my spindles. I found both driver and passenger side gussets are cracked at the weld. The spindle itself isnt crack, only the weld for the gussets is cracked. This is now the 3rd set of spindles for me. The first 2 gusseted sets were only bent not allowing for proper alignment numbers when doing my alignments. This is new to me.
