Bakflip MX4 Prelim Review

How do you like the tail gate kit? It appears like it will do a good job. Do you feel like it adheres well? Do you have a link to the one you ordered?

He has the seal on the sides installed wrong. The bottom seal is correct, It goes on upside down. Look at the above link.

Installed the MX4. I like it. Only problem was my rocky Mount on the front rail can't be used. I'm going to get something to extend the mount out further to get out in front of the cover.

 

Finally rained. @tekoma your method works great!!! only minor drops here and there. Thank you!

 

Got my MX4 today from Amazon warehouse deals. Paid $650 for it. It was a return item. Looks great, got a great deal. They have 1 left if anybody is interested. Sold on amazon by auto customs. Listed for $676 but called auto customs and they dropped the price to $650. 3rd Gen taco.

 

Wow that is an awesome price... i had bought two MX4s but ended up going with the F1. You will like it just don't over tighten the bolts.

 

He did install them wrong, but it seems more stream line than the way the instructions tell you to install. I installed them per instructions but seems weird the way it twists over the curve

 

I never thought about installing the side seals like he did, maybe it is better to do it that way. I know my tailgate closed harder the 1st few times I closed it so I know I have a good seal doing it like the instructions state.

 

Leaky seams resolved!

I had a few spots dripping at the seams even after installing the extra closed cell foam on the rails that I previously posted about. I decided to investigate further to see if I can completely resolve the issue.

The source of the leak is NOT through the seems at the fold points, it is at the edge of the seems where the rail seal overlaps. Standing water finds its way through the overlap and wicks underneath and runs along the seem on the underside. It then drips out at any random location. I decided to fill a few select areas with black RTV, and it worked! No more leaks at all! I flooded the cover with standing water and not a drop came through.

Solution below:

Water can come in at these overlaps in the top of the corner:




This is what I used:
(5cc syringe and plastic tip)

Allow to cure for 24 hours...and after flooding with water and letting sit for an hour...no leaks!

Haha ya - I have wanted this cover to be perfect and want to share the love. It's too bad BAK hasn't cared to address these things but overall the cover looks and functions great. Glad to finally have it leak proof.

I'll go through a drive through pressure car wash for the ultimate test (not something I normally do but it will be worst case).

Agree, Also some covers are leakier than others depending on how big the manufacturing gaps are.

Would change your instructions to address the top first then only if still leaking seal the underside.

Quoted your pics of the likely source of leaks. if the top is still leaking and the underside is sealed well the water will find other places to go... i.e. into the foam of the cover.

 

Agreed you may get away with doing the top only but the bottom silicone just prevents wicking from the edges down the length of the seems from below. It's not preventing water that does get under the seal from draining to the rail gutter.

I'm interested in the idea of the bakflip mx4. I see the concerns related to leaking. I'm living in a hot and dry environment. My main concern is providing storage of items for occasional road trips while retaining ability to use bed of truck. I'm ok with some water leakage anything stored in that will have a rubber tote box or is 'ok to be exposed to water'
What are your thoughts of having this flip cover when exposed to the TX sun - any thoughts / negatives on that from your experiences?

 

Going to install mine today. I don't think they are advertised as waterproof covers, but I still see people complaining about it. I'm going to seal mine up with RTV too and get it as best as I can.

 

Look forward to any thoughts on the install. Do you have any recommendations on purchase price/location through your search?

 

I got mine from Tonneau Cover World, call and haggle over the price. I got it for $800. I think others have gotten it cheaper used, maybe cheaper new but I'm fine with that price. The stealership wanted $1765 installed for the FiberMax lol.
