Hi first post here. I have a 2012 taco tx pro trd. Just got it this last January. Last few weeks I've been hearing a rattle under the truck. I think passenger side but its tough to distinguish. I only hear it when I decelerate. Any ideas ?

I'd start by checking heat shields on the exhaust by climbing under there and knocking stuff around until you find out what's loose.

Good luck and welcome to TW!

    That too.

Won't take long before a rattle inside takes your mind off the rattle outside...

Thanks I'll check them as soon as I get off. Heard a lot of people had issues with exhaust so was unsure if it was related to that.

i've had to fix or replace about 90% of the bolts holding all the heat shields on my 09

it only takes one to fail and boom you've got a rattle

I can ALMOST promise you it's your heat shield on your catalytic converter... pry the heat shield open just a little more if you find the spot where it's popped open a bit and I'll bet it'll go away. You'll still have to fix the converter but atleast you'll know what it is for next time. I had the same problem on my Expedition before I bought my Tacoma and it only did it when I was off the gas slowing down. Sounds like the same problem. You could also pay someone off to remove the cat if you're lucky enough to find someone to do that and then your rattle will go away and you'll gain a little extra HP and a tiny bit better mileage. Good luck!!

I agree with the other posters. I don't think I have a single heat shield that was bolted on the exhaust. Bad material choices speed up the corrosion with the hot and cold cycles.

Think it's just the shield or will the catalytic converter need to be replaced as well?

Thank you all for the input

You can try the shield, but mine ended up being the catalytic converter. Toyota replaced it for free under warranty.

    +1 on possible heat shield.

Could also be stock skid plates hitting each other. Before I got full skids, my stock ones would make noise all the time. I would hear it in drive thru like crazy. I put a piece of rubber in between them and it stopped.

Just pry the open spot that's doing the rattling open a little more so you can first see if it's even the catalytic converter or not? It could be something else entirely but if it is the catalytic converter then I'd just take it off as that's what I did with mine ( paid a guy $60.00) and you're all set and don't have to worry about it ever again. Btw my truck still passes smog without it even being there and no ones ever looked to see if it's there when I take it in for my smog test every year. That's my input anyway. Hope it helps.
