    ...too much shit to list.
Spindle gussets have been around long before they even created a second gen LT kit. First gens didn't even have a lower uniball let alone any binding. But bending and breaking the spindle is not hard once you add leverage from a 3.5" over kit and speed.

    Your truck, your decision.

Kit in question was a first-gen kit with the upper binding on the neck of the spindle.

You're not wrong. Your truck, your decision. But there is a point of view that questions welding a gusset with go-fast holes on a heat treated part.

The set I posted in the other thread that the gusset cracked were 4R ones, on a taco set now.

Hmm now I wonder if gusseting the spindle makes it more prone on snapping? Due to transfer weight and heat by welding it? :notsure:

No, I haven't run across any snapped 4R spindles. Yeah, mine were the TC sway version.

I think their are a lot of people who would of bent a handful of spindles by now, but their gusseted spindles are still holding up. I think I'd prefer to roll the dice on snapping a spindle(as unlikely as that is) versus replacing a spindle every few months. Everyone uses their trucks in different ways so for most the chances of bending a spindle is unlikely

This is where I am at, yes a catastrophic failure sucks big time, but possibly going through a spindle or two a year? No thanks.

My view may be a little different than most as I talk to people who currently have a bent spindle every week.

As far as speed goes if you have time to slow down for holes in to road and rocks in the bushes then your biggest threat to a spindle won't be your driving style it will be poor line choices when crawling

    Everything TW members recommend
    Agree.
In the northeast, generally speaking, we don't have the wide open real estate for high speed wheeling. We do have the obstacle ridden, rock crawling type of terrain that, if the wrong line is picked, you either fall into a steep drop-off or take a severe bump up a high angle boulder.
As i'm reading these bent/broken spindle threads, the more I'm worried about my spindles being bent or broken.

Don't know if this was ever answered, it's basically describing what your station (radio) is. Mobile radios in a vehicle will have a SSID as 9.

So my question to you is this. Once gusseted, the bending obviously stops. But how many spindles have you gusseted that actually broke?

Zero, but the majority of spindles I gusset are gusseted with the swaybar version of the gussets, and the ones that use the non swaybar gussets get an extra gusset that I make, and if I build another set in the future it will have an even different gusset added to it.

Do you preheat, post heat, neither or both? I have been going to all of my friends/contacts in the welding and fabrication industry, and getting a ridiculous amount of varying opinions. My pipeline welder friend and I seem to agree that a preheat to 450F will be beneficial.

I think the varying opinions comes from the fact that no one knows the chemical properties of the steel and heat treatment Toyota uses. If that was know it would narrow down the best practice for them quite a bit.

It would certainly help, as the preheat temp for mild steel varies greatly depending on the carbon content.
