I'd rather not think of all the $ spent :(
You might be disappointed with range. Truckers up here them for real close and to talk to the scales. The main radio they use "big" is a dual band (UHF/VHF) $400 and you can talk for miles even in the hills.

Outside trucking I see more HAM radios. Hope that helps

:woot: Mike and I both passed. We both tried the General license but didn't study for it and didn't pass. I'll try to do that this summer if I get into Ham.

I need to study a bit and take the test. Looks like March 4 is the next test date up here.

Do it. I put in an hour studying each night the last three nights and passed it easily. The General class test...not so easy haha. But I didn't study that at all.

Now the fun part: shopping for radios! Haha. I need to figure out my stereo/switch panel problem first as I may change that up so I can add more switches before getting into a radio.

Changed the thread title and updated the poll, hope no one minds the changes! And meant to post this earlier...
My response to the poll is temporary... :anonymous:

I'll be looking for a Ham radio in the coming months recommendations anyone?

Currently thinking about picking up a BaoFeng, something like this UV-2R.

Then getting a better antenna, the Nagoya NA-771

And then to play with APRS, this cable to connect the radio to an old Droid phone running APRSdroid.

Hmmm. I didn't see that model of radio when I was looking. Even cheaper than the one I saw haha. I may just pick one up to start playing with it

I'm looking at a mobile vehicle mounted radio to have the maximum range. Those handhelds transmit with around 5 watts of power while a vehicle,e mount will transmit around 50 watts. Still researching but I'm leaning towards a dual band, dual receive radio with integrated APRS. That should allow me to transmit and receive APRS data while also having a channel dedicated to voice communication.

Yeah they are cheap, this isn't the newest model but from what I've seen from tests it appears mostly the same as the "newer" model of the same basic appearance.

True... I just want to be able to practice first before I invest in a nicer one like those. I was told that running an APRSdroid is great because you can see other's location while you are traveling. Seems pretty cool for trail runs to have someone at the front and back knowing each others locations on a map.

Just got my callsign! :woot: They messed up my middle name though. :boink:
:spy: @ffirg you have yours too.

I'll be getting the BaoFeng UV-82HP (about $63) in the coming weeks before spring break so I can play with it then, and see if I can't get the supplied antenna to work before I upgrade it.

Just requested to add this to the Alaska stickies.

Yeah apparently despite not putting a middle name on ANY of the forms he saw my email and assumed it meant my middle initial was a J.

When I called him he was all defensive and said it was my fault but he'd fix it lol. I already fixed it with the FCC online though.

Haha well that's good. I'll update mine later.

I tried ordering that radio on Amazon and it wouldn't ship to alaska. I'm assuming because of the battery...
