ive notice that Im not getting the fuel mileage I normally get on my 02 DC. She's got 154k miles, rust free and in great shape. Also I have noticed I can faintly smell fuel if I stick my nose between the cab and bed or In the rear wheel well. I was thinking that my fuel pump may be going out and that could be decreasing my mileage. I've look on top of the tank best I can and the fuel neck, all the lines look good (no cracks or dry rot). Also I've had the Evaporate emissions system leak code for over a year. It was smoke tested at Toyota and a new charcoal canister was installed about two years ago. Had done by previous owner. All I've done is put a new gas cap on and checked for bad intake gasket. (sprayed brake cleaner around intake at idle with no increase of rpm) still have the check engine light. any suggestions on testing pressure of my fuel tank, or testing my fuel pump. Anyone got rid of the evap system leak code ?

Can't see your location... I had fuel smell and it was pinholes in top of tank near straps. Fuel pumps in these good forever, you just don;t see them failing. Your fuel tank is GONE. I did charcoal filter as well but MIL persisted. If you want to fix it you need a new tank because your EVAP system cannot pull a VAC with holes in fuel tank... mine failed also an 02' DC, at same mileage. For the record the smoke test should have been done at tank... slip a rubber glove over smoker to gas tank inlet at door. Good luck!

The trucks lived in Virginia and North Carolina it's whole life. If it has a hole it would have to be from chaffing at the bands..... I'm sure that tank is not cheap.

its a Toyota truck and that's all the modifications needed
when the fuel pump fails it will just kick out and go bad, there isn't any lack of pumping fuel until that happens, my OEM pump went over 240k miles and was still going until I got rid of the truck. also leaks develop around where the fuel pump bolts to the top of the gas tank the gasket goes bad and rust will develop around the rim, you will have a gas smell and leakage around the plate area this is common on high mileage GEN1s

If you search this prob. you'll see an awful lot of people replacing charcoal canisters and being good.....'til it happens again in a couple of years.
I know on Camrys there's an overflow valve on top of the tank. It fails and ruins the canister. Might take of the tank and look around the top to see how that works on a Taco. Post results as I'm sure this is going to be a bigger and bigger problem for us with age. On camrys if the valve fails internally it wont show on a smoke test except to dump smoke to the char. can. leading them to think the can is bad.

And of course, sometimes it is. It's mostly plastic valves and old too, gas deteriorates the parts inside.

I would pull the bed to get a better understanding of what is going on, it only takes 30 minutes or so to do with a friends help. Easy access

Stole this pic. from GreenMM. If this valve fails it ruins a Char. Can in short order.
