When I decided to build mine last year, I was heavily weighing just buying the HF splitter. Budget wise I think I came in about $150 under the HF splitter cost by building it, but if I hadn't had the beam/ram/wedge assembly already it would have pushed the cost over and I would have picked up the HF unit.

I am running the HF engine that comes on their splitter and it's been damn good so far. Starts on the first pull most times and has more than enough power. If I run into a twisty, knotty log, I end up twisting the I beam well before the engine bogs down.

FTS! I found a glory hole of downed oak trees, then realized it was in the middle of a poison oak patch...never went back. Worst thing I harvest through is buckthorn.

Immune to poison oak/ivy/sumac. Walked through a patch in the dark at a state park. Had the dog crawl in the sleeping bag with it on her, my wife got it bad that time. I've never had a reaction from it:fingerscrossed:

You still don't want to burn it. You can get a reaction from the smoke -- in your lungs. If not you, perhaps your neighbors.

Can you send me a bunch? I have a fireplace with a great draft, and I won't burn it until the wind is blowing north or northwest for my less than cool neighbor

Nope, never would burn it. And I still don't tempt fate with respect to touching the stuff.

All that's left of my wood supply after this long, wet winter. There might still be a cold night here or there through April when I'll need a fire, but the burn season is basically over.

Once my tax return lands I'm ordering a 40' high side full of logs.

So I scored some free wood toward the end of last year. There were a few pieces of red fir, and several pieces of what I was told was locust. I've been splitting it a little at a time by hand until I get a powered splitter. The locust rounds are a bitch to split. On the pine I've gotten accustomed to, I can split a round in half easily with an ax, then quarter it and it is good for firewood after seasoning. This locust is to the point that I need an ax to start, put a maul on to peel off 1 piece of firewood size, or I need 8# maul, 10# sledge, and 2-3 wedges to break off bigger pieces. I figure it is going to make some very good firewood after it dries out this summer. I am also in line to get an entire red fir tree from the same person. All I have to do is show up and take it away. I am pretty sure he is going to take care of all the branches, and cutting everything to rounds.

On hardwoods, yes. On pine, I look more for 4" minimum, usually closer to 6". Pine just burns too fast for small size. I kept a bunch of maple down to about 1" for firewood. It dries out quickly, and burns easily.

My father in-law gifted me with a locust he removed from his yard, for firewood. I split it by hand with a maul and had great difficulty doing so. Reading about the wood later I felt better. It is tough as iron.

Didn't know there was a wood burning thread. I would freeze to death in the winter without the wood stove. There's nothing like wood heat. If it dips below 72 in my house the girls all say how they're "cold".

My Englander 30NC that had it's legs chopped off and turned into an insert of sorts. Works great. Only needs to be loaded twice a day.

I've usually got a good stash of wood.

I need to get started on splitting, but it's been so rainy lately here in the pine tree state that I haven't wanted to, lol.
