    Hey guys,

I have been a long time E30 nut and I decided to finally get into the off-road scene after living in Colorado for, basically, all of my life. So, this November I picked up a 2002 double cab TRD Off-Road with 133,260 miles. Boy have I been missing out. Off-road >>> On-road.

Anyways, I decided to make a build thread to document the truck's mods and adventures in its entirety.

    11/11/2016 -- Original Purchase -- 133,260

I bought the truck from a local used car dealer. Originally I was planning on getting a manual access cab truck as I definitely prefer manuals... But, I needed a vehicle that can carry 4 adults more comfortably than my E30. Thus, I ended up discarding the manual transmission and going with a double cab... Maybe a swap in the future??? One requirement that didn't change is that I wanted a completely stock platform that had a clean CarFax. I found out quite quickly that one with a completely clean record was very difficult to find without spending a fortune. I got lucky with this one in that it's record is relatively clean. An accident was reported but after inspection, no serious repairs were found. The bumper seems slightly tweaked so that leads me to believe it was a fender bender... and I plan on doing a custom bumper anyways :D. Here are some pictures of the truck as I received it:

11/18/2016 -- Timing belt, water pump, thermostat, tensioner bearing, drive belts, radiator cap -- 133,480

One thing brought up during the PPI was that the timing belt, and subsequently the water pump, had not been replaced recently which led me to believe it had never been replaced. I replaced those items and a couple others.

    11/25/2016 -- 265/70R16 Falken Wild Peak A/T3W -- 133,844

The truck came with original KO's but they were super worn. So, I replaced them with stock sized Falken Wild Peak A/T3W's. This was mostly due to their low cost and the reviews seemed pretty darn good especially for winter driving. I chose stock size for now because I am planning a full overhaul of the suspension in early 2017 and I plan to do new wheels at the same time so I may as well do bigger tires as well.

    11/26/2016 -- Hidden Valley Rd./Dakan Rd.

This was the truck's, and my, first outing. I hit up a local trail with my buddy in his Frontier Pro-4X. Here are some pictures:

    12/03/2016 -- Kenwood Excelon KDC-X599 Headunit

I quickly became tired of the stock radio so I replaced it with one that has Bluetooth capabilities. So far I am loving the unit.

    12/10/2016 -- Yankee Hill

After the first outing I became addicted to the trails so I went out again as soon as I could, this time up Yankee Hill here in Colorado with the same friend.

    12/29/2016 -- Grey Wire Mod -- 135,093

I'm planning on hitting the trails tomorrow (12/30), and the snow is abundant so I decided it was due time to do the grey wire mod.

    An uninteresting picture:

Anyways, that's my truck for now. I'm planning on doing armor and an OME lift early next year. Between now and then I'm going to hit as many trails as possible.

Here's my E30 for anyone who cares:

Yeah that's around the last time I went up there. We're planning to check it out again tomorrow. Not really sure what the conditions are like.

Before the storm it was about 8-12 inches and we couldn't finish the trail. We didn't push it too hard but still a challenge. I would throw some weight in the bed for snow, I use a few sandbags, helps a lot with traction. Make sure to post some pics!

Well we checked it out today. It was pretty passable for my stock taco. We did hit a hill late into the trail that had a high centered ATV that we helped. That's where we decided to turn around and go back. On the way back my buddy drifted out of the ruts and got stuck in deep snow so I had to help him out and then he helped me through the mess he made hahaha.

btw the grey wire mod is the best. Locking in 4hi really helps get through the deep snow.

Shyeeit. I know this fool welcome from a fellow r3v'er.

Good to see you over here, sure your first gen will be an adventure!

Do you still have the e30? I don't e30 no more, but I still have a bmw as well as the taco.

PS I think a few other people grew out of e30s and picked up tacos and are over here. Yan I know is for sure.

Yeah I still have the E30. It's kind of on the back burner now that I'm working on the taco. It also needs quite a bit of work which I'm hoping to get started on after winter. The nice thing about the taco is it makes the M20 feel sorta quick hahaha

After the ordeal Yan went through I wouldn't blame him for moving on.

    01/03/2017 -- Alignment and ABS Diagnosis -- 135,303

I decided to get the truck aligned since there was a slight pull left. Since it was in the shop, I also had them pull the ABS codes since the light had been on ever since I bought the truck. The light was always on and solid so it was a persistent issue of some sort. They pulled code 51 which indicates a locked up ABS pump. The techs also checked power and ground at the computer. It was determined to start with the computer and actuator assembly. At ~$1900 for parts and labor, I think I'm going to look into it myself and probably swap some of that shit out with used parts. In the meantime I will have to start research on the ABS system and get my right leg re-accustomed to pumping lol. For some good news, at least the leftwards pull was fixed

I've heard you could just do away with the abs by just pulling the fuse? I never looking into it since I don't have it

After doing a bit of research on the 51 code, I'm probably just going to do without it until/unless I stumble upon a used control module that will work. I might check a few small problem areas that might be causing the problem, but I don't have high hopes.

Yeah most of these off road guys don't care for the abs on the early trucks anyway. How much did you spend on the taco btw? Curious.

The e30 looks great. I love the cirrus Blau. It is a huge night and day difference having something like a taco and an e30 haha

I picked it up for ~$13.5k. It was a chore finding a clean low mileage first gen. They sell like crazy around here.

The E30 is actually glacier blue, it's a much less common, sort of metallic version of cirrus.

I haven't really done anything to the truck besides lame maintenance. However I do have some armor on order. I think I will need to move suspension to the top of the list of shit-to-do since I'm now adding weight to the truck.

Anyways, here are some pictures from a quick trail trip today:

What did you learn about the code 51. I just found it on mine. Also not sure how to test the ground and power to the ABS.
