This is a alert to all my toyo family. I have had that horrible p0420 code come on and.off for me for the ladt ten years. Today I went to get my 2000 v6 tacoma pre-runner smogged at a test only station star cert all that shit. CA DMV MAKES YOU DO. I RAN SEAFOAM Through tank and top end last night. Truck has always run great. Checked all the monitors for complete. All was good and.no light I caught the lucky window! Dude.tells me he has never heard of this code issue with toyos. So he looks at my truck does his visual basic lazy ass inspection tells me I failed cause my cat was not California legal and it was missing the stamp. I said well I know that its legal and why haven't I ever had a smog tech say that before I always have passed. So me not knowing better I took his word. I get home climb under there and the CA stamp is.right there covered by a little dirt and discoloration but its 11 yrs old. If he would have not been some damn lazy and climbed under there he would.have seen it too. So watch out brothers and sisters know your stuff cause these California smog guys will take.your money and screw you anyway they can. I am taking it to the referee next week. He will check it out and when i pass which i will. He is gonna tell me how to file a.complaint against the tech, shop and get my money back, this tech didn't know what the hellhe was doing. So trust none of these techs make aure you are absolutely familar with all your exhaust components..... and your states laws.

Don't need em toyota cal spec ecu on all trucks cars toyota are set to trigger as soon as the cat is working at.less then 95 percent efficiency. If your scan tool has a oscilloscope and you know how to read one then its easy to tell if your sensors are right. The NOX monitor that is put in your tail pipe no matter what state will not fail you if your cat is working at 60 percent efficiency or better but your MIL will trigger as soon as the cat is working at less then 95 percent. that is a big window .As long as your MIL hasn't set.

p0420 means your bank1 cat failed, CA or not it shouldn't pass smog if they do it properly.

p0420 is more likely the sensor is bad not the cat itself

cats outlast the sensors...if you never got bad gas, cats can easily go +200,000 whereas o2
    normally die around 130,000 - 160,000

    ETCs are diagnostic.

It tells you what system the failure is in. It doesn't tell you exactly what part is failing or is bad.

"bank 1 cat failed" doesn't mean the bank 1 cat failed. It means the failure is within that system.

    right
it means 'the system' as saying cat efficiency too low...could be sensor, could be cat, could
be mouse chewed the wires, could be mud, grease, or dirt covering up
the outside air sampling part of the o2 sensor.

I am gonna bet on: need new o2 sensor and good to go

P0420 only occurs if the o2 sensor is operating properly, the upstream swings up and down, the downstream is expect to have long slow delays to confirm catalyst operation. It's very rare that an o2 sensor cause a p0420 fault.

If the o2 sensors were failing they wouldn't report properly enough to trigger the p0420 code in the first place. A stuck downstream o2 sensor would be the same as a "good" catalyst, dependent on the voltage.

Well now here we go again...

First, CA has not " sniffed " since January 2015. The inspection is purely OBD and visual inspection.

Second, in CA a single OBD error code = you failed.

    Third, 52,799 is correct.

Fourth, there is no such thing as a CA ECU. All vehicles are built all state legal.

Fifth, In CA you can only use genuine OE cats on a second gen ('I know the op is 1st gen ) which means a very expensive trip to buy a whole new " header " for that side when you do toast one. Go buy one at a junk yard umm yeah nope...illegal to sell used emission system components at junk yards in CA.

Sixth, it is true that anything remotely related to the emission system must be OE and stamped as such. Stop by any inspection station or exhaust shop in CA and ask them to pull up your second gen and review the CA legal aftermarket emission system parts allowed ( i.e.: cats ) ...oh what's that ...the list has nothing on it what !?

Seventh, fuck CARB and the blackmail horse they rode in on
