I've only owned my Taco since Nov 18, 2016. It now only has 4,568 miles on it. With no issues at all. I did have some of the transmission worries at first. But I stopped using my cruise and let the transmission learn my driving for about 2,000 miles or so. Now it shifts fine, even in cruise control. I'm. It saying I'm in love with the truck. But the more I drive it, the more I like it.
I drove fords for years. But had so much trouble with the last 2 out of 3 brand new fords I've owned. I even had a 2011 f-150 that was suck a mess Ford bought it back from me @ 50,000 miles. I also had a 2015 Explorer that had issues that the dealer couldn't/wouldn't even fix. Such as the rear lift gate not opening when it's below 30*, no passenger side airbags worked accorording to Ford the harness was to short and an extender was on back order for 10 months. Finally the transmission started jurking at about 25,000 miles. So I traded it for a Highlander (which is by far my favorite vehicle I've ever owned).
So far I am impressed with Toyotas vehicles. These being the fourth and fifth brand new vehicles I've ever owned. And 0 problems so far.
    That is all.

There was a video I saw somewhere, where a guy went around looking for exotic cars for crazy deals. Sometimes he came on top, other times, not so much. There was a Porsche with something like 200k miles and was relatively well taken care of, however they took it to a Porsche tech to have it looked at and found about $14k worth of work to do to get it up to nominal and safe running conditions.

So without an inspection, that car is worth $0

Not always true, they dropped the Civic down and even off the recommended buy list a few years ago.

I only have ~3200mi on TRD Sport DCSB 6psd and have not experienced one of the gripes mentioned on here. My clutch is squeaky after a long day of errands, normal driving I never heard it, but easily fixed from advice on this forum. Anyway, I came from two Hondas; loved my civic HATED the CR-V. I hope :fingerscrossed: this truck lasts a long time like my civic and I have no reason to believe that it will not hold up to my expectations :plane:.

I base most of my large expenditure decisions on Consumer Reports. They had better be accurate! They are a non-biased, third party scrutinizer/data bucket... Or, at least they should be. Not good to see the Tacoma at the back of the pack, but it may provide Toyota some motivation to get with it as far as QA/QC.

To be fair, I don't even own a 3rd gen, but I always keep an ear to the ground in case I end up in a situation where I need a new pickup on short notice. That is the only reason I visit third gen threads.

Nobody can say yet. You can't say 10, 20, 30k miles and 1-2 years, no problems and base reliability on that. I could buy a shit car on Craigslist for a few grand and have no reliability issues for that long.

It's a brand new truck, let's see how they are doing at 200k+

I think this whole thread has reliability problems.
