Just curious one day, I looked in a Fram box at Wal Mart and it had a threaded one.

More profit for the manufacturers. Less material same price.

Pricey. The filter I bought at my local dealer was $5.60.

Usually the case that you can find an expensive solution to a simple problem.

A length of 5/8" ID tubing from Home Depot stuck onto the click-in drain seems it'd do the same job?

I didn't need it when I did my oil change by I have a style of drain pan that pretty well eliminates any splash.

I hear you. I can get mine at the dealer for 5.95. The point was they are still charging about the same price for what now is nothing more than an accordion of paper, some plastic and a couple o-rings.

Yep. Way of the world, my friend. Go buy a half gallon of ice cream or a pound of coffee. Oh wait, that ice cream carton is now 1.5 pints and that coffee can only has 12oz in it...

...^^^... You will love it. Did you get the special wrench too ?

Amazon has 2 models. One is Toyota and 1 is after market and both are excellent.

I bought both and sent one back for credit.

...^^^... my older oil filter wrench kept slipping off the plastic housing.
    Don't know the part numbers.

    So

I changed to a Toyota aluminum oil cover housing and bought a slotted aluminum oil filter housing wrench and wow.

    Got everything from Amazon

It's fun to change oil again

So, it took me a bit to read this thread. But what is the proper model number for the Trd filter? Ptr43-00081 or Ptr43-00082?

    Look here: https://trdparts4u.toyotaofdallas.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=298275
    and here: https://trdparts4u.toyotaofdallas.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=298274

'82 is the one spec'd for the 3rd gen Tacoma.

(plus the pictures of the '81 show it is way too tall to fit in the housing, but you wouldn't have any way to know that if you've not done a filter change... :) )

Never seen them sold separately, but someone out there must have them. I need a new one; after using it 4+ times, the plastic threads have started slipping.
