Why? Aren't the manufactures supposed to make products we like and want instead of dictating what they think we should have? Where is the freedom of choice in that? All I'm asking for id a good old mechanical throttle, is that so difficult?

Thank the federal government. The reason for drive by wire is traction control. When the computer in your car detects a loss of traction it cuts your throttle control. It can't do that with a drive by cable system. I am surprised that there aren't any throttle cable conversion kits out there.

the exact reasons for drive by wire

Electronic throttle control represents an advancement in engine control technology enabling or facilitating new safety and performance attributes, including:

 Enabling additional safety features, such as vehicle stability control where the ECM reduces power transmission to the wheels to assist the driver in maintaining directional control
 Eliminating mechanical throttle cables and problems associated with these cable and throttle bodies, such as sticking
 Eliminating problems associated with prior technology such as idle air control hardware
 Adaptable throttle response to driver and driving conditions, such as snow mode (available on some vehicles) where the rate of throttle valve opening can be controlled to allow the reduction of engine output from normal
 Enabling greater throttle control under cold start and idle vehicle conditions or when coasting, reducing emissions and improving fuel economy
     Smoother shifting/transmission
 A simplified cruise control system, including the implementation of dynamic radar type cruise control
 Adaptation to changing engine loads from auxiliary equipment in the vehicle, for example, air conditioning etc.
 Enabling hybrid vehicle technology, such as when the vehicle is powered by electric motors, allowing the engine to autonomously turn on and off for improved fuel economy
 Increased flexibility for variations in vehicle features
     Improved self-diagnosis.

    And there you have it.....

Unless you want to part with a lot of cash(and who knows what kind of problems the "fix" will lead to), you simply have to experiment with how to feather/control the throttle.
My '15 Tacoma automatic is OK. I got introduced in '06 to DBW when my wife bought an Avalon. Took me awhile to figure out how to drive the car w/o killing everyone in front of me.

4 levels of input, that is an extreme exaggeration

it has 1/16th degree resolution between the usable range of 4deg to 90deg on the throttle plate

I don't know specs but I know how it responds when I'm driving. On the freeway I play with slowly pressing the pedal down and watching the tach. I can't just speed up for a slight incline, I have to keep pressing down until the revs jump and the tranny down shifts. I haven't watched it so close on surface streets but on the freeway my truck cannot accelerate by just a couple hundred RPM; something I could do with every other vehicle I have owned. In over twenty years of driving I've never had so little control over my speed through direct pedal height.

In the two weeks I've been driving it I am getting a natural feel for feathering it in. I guess I'm just averse to change in this area.

Just bought a 2010 w/6cyl/6spd and it's my 1st drive by wire manual tranny. I've always had a manual and this drive by wire response takes away any fun there is with a manual transmission. IMHO it is a bad design and one might as well just go with the auto.
