Replacing it all... (recomendations please)

2005 v6 dbl cab 6 spd 4x4 base model

I bought the truck used with an older aftermarket head unit in it that I just hate. It's decent, but the buttons are too small and the dials too sensitive. my stock old speakers are faded and sound like isht.

I plan on removing everything and installing sound deadening (I found plenty of info on this already)

here is what I would like-
-a head unit with big buttons
-an input jack
-usp/thumbdrive input
-Bluetooth/wifi/mic
-all new speakers in the factory size
This would mean two 6x9's, two 6.5's and two tweets, right? I also plan to replace ALL the speaker wire and maybe the harness.

maybe I should look for a unit from a newer taco?
I've been browsing all morning, there are waaaaaay too many options so I'm a bit overwhelmed. I dont know exactly what I am looking for. I'm definitely not trying to have the best system on the block. just something newer that will last.
Can I do all this for $500ish?

 

I saw a post that said aftermarket 6x9s wont fit unless I make a bracket, so use 6.5s up front. is this accurate?

My advice is to spend most of that $500 budget on a decent head unit, dash kit, and wiring harness. The stock speakers will sound much better with a good HU and you can upgrade the speakers later. When you buy "budget" head units with all those features you will inevitably end up with junk that won't do any of those things well. I have installed and owned many car stereos over the years and I would recommend Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine.
You could get all that equipment for your budget but I guarantee you will be as disappointed as you are now.
You can get door brackets that will hold 6X9's, check Crutchfield again or bestbuy.com

 

Just did something similar, but kept my existing (factory) HU. My gut says that $500 is a little low, budget-wise.

If you figure you'll have your truck forever, maybe spring for a nice HU and decent front speakers? (My build went in phases, and even new door speakers made a huge difference.) You can amp/sub/rear speakers later.

Speaker-choice-wise, I **thought** that 6x9s fit naturally, but would need something to space them out of the way of the window as it rolls down. Check Crutchfield and see what they say fits. I found a better selection of 6.5" speakers out there, and used this bracket:

For speakers I recently ordered the below for my 2006, cheaper than the same setup on Crutchfield and they sound great, I suggest looking at what Crutchfield has, then searching for the parts on Amazon.
