Tranny rebuild for a 2009 tacoma 5 speed

Unfortunately I went to go get my oil changed and when i was showed how dirty my tranny oil was i was shocked since the guy i bought it from said he changed the fluids regularly and so now my second and third gear grind horribly. I took it to a tranny shop and said i need to rebuild my transmission. I researched and typically this year of manual trannys have brass synchros which are more delicate then other metals in the tranny. So i need new synchros. Any thoughts ?

 

There are all kinds of variables that come into play here .
Mileage and the type of driving you do on a daily basis since you purchased the truck
Lift kits with larger tires ?
Was the transmission serviced at regular intervals with proven documentation ?
A lot of members replace their shifter bushing when they begin to have issues . It,s a very cheap fix and works 99 % of the time .

Try a shifter bushing before you start throwing new synchros at the transmission. If your transmission does have to be removed , you will be needing a new shifter bushing anyway .

It has 175k miles runs 235s , never heavily loaded took it off roading twice , showed my sister how to drive manual on it

 

When i got the tranny fluids changed the one inside was pitch black and when the new fluid came in thats when the problems started

 

did you replace the fluid with a proper manual transmission oil, like Redline MT-90?

 

so at the shop i got the tranny fluid replaced they said it was the correct fluid GL5-75w90 . I was going to just drain that fluid and put mt-90 in it but i talked to a toyota mechanic and he said gl5-75w90 was the correct fluid and that the damage was already done. So i needed a tranny rebuild or another transmission

 

Sounds like you did everything that you possibly could and also did your research .
You have two choices .
1 - rebuild the transmission in your truck $$$$$$$$$$
2- Install a second hand transmission
Theses transmissions are available used with very low mileage and not that costly . I would suggest calling your local wrecking yard if you plan to go with a low mileage second hand transmission .

Keep in mind you are purchasing the transmission and not the clutch . With that said , you may want to research a clutch kit at the same time . 75% of Tacoma World members use Marlin Crawler for a replacement clutch

Seems strange that the problem occurred after the fluid change ?
Before the fluid change , the transmission shifted good between 2 and 3 ?

 

What kind of timeline are we talking here since the GL5 was put in - as in time and approximate miles?

If it's all fairly recent, I'd drain that GL5, and fill with Redline MT90 or other GL4 before you do anything - the extreme pressure additives in the GL5 do not play well with synchros. GL4 or GL5 is specified by Toyota, and for the life of me cannot understand why they allow GL5 - it works poorly at best in a manual transmission. Not only does the sulfur cause accelerated wear on the synchros, the EP additives severely reduce the friction between the synchos and their tapered mating surfaces on the respective gear, and can cause the symptoms you describe even on a synchro ring that's still in good condition, or even new. For the price of the oil, I'd start there.

 

the transmission oil change was done 1 week ago. And before my 2nd and 3rd gear worked fine it all started after the fluid change. And i ordered some mt-90 but it doesnt get here untill a week or so . None of the auto part shops near me carry it .

I would definitely try another brand of fluid

 

Yeah 1 week and i ordered MT-90 but it doesnt come til February 24-- march 1st . Best i can do while it gets here is shift slowly ? And skip third gear ? What do you recomend
