Don't want to sound retarded, but what are all those lines going to the plastic box and filler tube of the tank? I don't have these on my truck.

    *EDIT* I have a 2000

    Really? Interesting.
I would be about 1000% sure they are for the emissions recovery system. The SAI: secondary air injection. They are like on many other vehicles. There are valves on the gas tank that open for expanded pressure. The black box above and behind tank would be the 'charcoal filter' type of vapor collection box. Then when the engine is warmed up and at just the right moment a solenoid valve opens and the cleaner (due to charcoal filter) emissions / vapor that was collected and stored in that box travel back to the intake area of the motor and are re-burned during normal combustion.

The filler neck collects gas fumes 'vapor' and sends it to this box as well, rather than 'vent to atmosphere' and therefore pollute more. These are all cleaner air setups.
You have a part broken or missing BAM! a CEL is triggered and you will flunk smog tests 'cuz they are sure you're polluting now.

So called "CA" or Cali emissions vehicles had these mandatory installations made first. My '95 Kawi ZX6E moto has a similar (smaller) setup as it's the CA version. I am also trying to install something close to that in a my '98 Ford e250 which awfully runs on CNG. I want to install this system when I switch it back to gasoline and therefore have studied these systems with interest.

In the older crappier 'pollutier' days, you would just shrug and vent expanding tank pressure build up out a one way vent, and vapor from fuel fill ups that come out right to atmosphere. They don't play that anymore. It's all tightly regulated and captured for cleaner emissions and less gunk in the atmosphere. Maybe your truck is pre-vapor recovery? (and not a cali spec truck!)
and some people do a SAI / Emissions 'delete' to get rid of weight, and complexity. A lot of my people do that in the motorbike world for the older bikes.

Ah, I see, it's for emissions

Maybe it's because it's a 2000 and back then they didn't have it?
    dunno

Thanks for the reply, though :)

I'm in canada, but my truck is american (don't know where it was), and nope, doesn't seem to be a "CA" vehicle. Must be why I don't have it

Thanks for the explanations, though, really interesting

Rust? I don't see no stinking rust!

Tough situation. Blessings to you for working to help him however you can!

Hopefully his family is making provision for his future care. There will come a day they can no longer provide that. I've seen several adult 'children' in need of dire help, because their loving parents did not plan. And I've seen others thrive to the best of their ability, and be well cared for, because their parents did plan.

It's not always about the money, although that's of course a reality. But it's always about the planning, no matter what the right direction is.

Very interesting clarifications about the SAI / vapor recovery. I didn't know they put that under the hood certain years.

Thanks for your comments on my cousin.
His parents are in their 80s and have taken care of him almost their whole lives. He's been a complete handful for them. They finally moved out of the area 2 years ago to Florida and are just hoping he can hack it on his own (he can't).
There isn't really any safety net for him either. It seemed he was heading towards marrying a woman with some very slightly lower abilities than the general public, but my cousin seems to have shot that in the foot mostly. They are still seeing each other, but he manages to strain everything, and work against himself all the time sadly. He's in and out of the mental health division of the ER... not coping with the outside world well for years.

Crud. Tried to just post this 'ad' in the parts section and I'm restricted due to not 50 posts. :( Not good. Dunno if I should start posting to hit 50 or what. So for now I'll post it inline here:

(TITLE SHOULD READ: 2004 original bed and a tailgate. Dirt cheap or free. Rusty, rot behind rear wheels. New England loc)

    Hi all.

I recently swapped out the surface rusty and small holes rot behind the wheel wells silver stock Taco short bed.

The sleeve inserts for the bolts for all bolt in spots (4 + 2 rears) are all fine, except for one which is destroyed. The insert broke free with a impact gun finally and then tore and broke the rib around it. It can still be used and gripped with a different style bolt / receiver, but the threaded insert area is just gone.
Also, with all the manhandling I had to do getting it out, it broke off even more rusty sheet metal behind the rear wheels.

OH. And I was so pissed off at the rot / rust on the rest of the truck fighting me on every simple step... well, I smacked the bed with a sledgehammer in anger - uh, twice in the flat horizontal base inner bed part (not outer fenders etc...)

So there you have it. A not great shape bed body.
It's been stored for about a month in a garage and they want it gone.
It's physically located in central southern NH, but it could also be driven down to the greater Boston area and / or Cape Cod for someone without much fuss.

Please let me know if any interest. I'd hate to see it go to scrap metal, but it needs to go quite soon. Like probably in 1-2 weeks at most it needs to go for a walk and not come back :)

Pics of grey bed. The tailgate is actually black. See earlier in this thread, I did a little mix and match
Also, the cable tailgate stays were chopped by the parts dismantler, so the cable stays are gone for the tailgate.

And also if anyone happens to have a 1st Gen Taco front bumper complete or parts please let me know. Here's a pic of the damage done rear ending a stopped car that also rear ended the stopped car in front of that. No doubt the first driver's stupid driving caused it all, but we all know how insurers score the rear ender the person at fault no matter how erratically and stupidly a driver in front drives.

It's not pretty. But can any of that be pulled out at all? Don't know these trucks and it's an hour away. Are some parts plastic and some metal? That middle chrome piece, could that be pulled back out?

Thanks, and I'm upping my post count you know. Happy to respond today to all questions and comments!

    A small update:
I installed an Amazon bought $89 chrome front bumper piece there. Looks terrific now.
I used a hydraulic jack (after I removed the whole bumper assembly) to put under the black steel bumper subframe behind the bumper and then jacked the whole truck up almost off the ground. Works great to bend back that subframe piece and get it most of the way back to straight forward (it was hit twice and bent towards the ground drooping the whole bumper as seen in the above pics).
The truck looks pretty terrific on the front end now, the re-alignment and new part helped reform or de-deform the grey plastic horizontal insert part above the chrome.
I was very happy with the look and fit of this aftermarket part if anyone needs a link or reference to the part. A year on, and it still looks exc.
