I want to change out the white door handles on my 2015 SR5 for the black SR door handles, but I couldn't find any videos on You Tube on this and I didn't find any threads on here about doing this.

I did find several video's on You Tube of some other models of Toyota's, and they showed that you could remove a black plastic hole cover that is on the back of the door which is inline with the door handles, which gives you access to what looked like an M8 spline head screw that once removed allows you to remove both sections of the door handles from the outside w/o removing the door panels.

So I checked the doors on my 2017 and I have the same plastic hole plugs. So can any confirm that if I remove the plugs and remove the screw that's behind it, will I in fact be able to remove the door handles from the outside.

It's easy to remove the inner door panel. A few trim pieces, 2 screws, electrical connector, and the panel pops out, up and away. Check this video. https://youtu.be/c37zgaUQsVo

I've already got the black SR bumper caps and the mirror covers, and the black door handles will complete the SR parts going on my SR5, and the black door handles look great against the super white paint.

It's funny, but I knew from previous posts that I was going to get some of the typical negative comments that you get from a lot of the TuRD owners here, and some are bigger TuRD's than others.

I like it. The black door handles won't show all the scratches that the shiny painted door handles get. And on a white truck especially more small black accents add to the over all look.

I switched mine out last week on my 16. Front are super easy - Just remove the plastic cover you posted above, and use a torx to loosen single bolt behind. If you have lock/unlock sensor on driver door, take your time as it's a little more sensitive to re-install.

The back will take you more time.

    - Follow the steps to remove the interior door panel
    - You'll have to remove the plastic weather seal to gain access
    - Use the torx on the 3 on the side of the door to drop the lock mechanism (that will give you access to the torx for door handle removal)

Back took me about 20ish minutes. Happy with how it turned out, let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the been there, done that feedback, and if I have any other questions I'll PM you. I've looked at the video and it looks fairly simple to remove the door panels.

@adrwshry -- quick question since you've been into these, are the handles by any chance swappable across driver/passenger sides?

They're directional, so unfortunately not. The F driver has the sensor so no swapping to the back there. The 2 back have different caps also with different thread location for install/removal. I have the part numbers if anyone needs.

Thanks. I'd seen the PNs at Partznet and figured they were right/left specific but hadn't dug into my doors to confirm. Sorta was hoping to explore adding smartkey capability o the passenger front door as the ECU is supposedly capable of it. Maybe there will be an update in a future model year that can do that. :)

After 34 days I finally got the matte black door handles and rear covers today, and I successfully removed the passenger side door panel. Then I removed the single torx screw on the back edge of the door that holds on the rear cover, and I removed the door latch mechanism and let it drop down off of the door lock rod, but I can't figure out how to get the handle and cover off, and when I try to zoom in on the pictures that were posted up, I can't see how to disconnect the tabs shown in the pictures to release the cover and the door handle

    Update:

I just found and released the two small clip just in front of the other torx screw, and now all I have to do I think is figure out how to release the clips holding the rear cover on. I'm going to look at it tomorrow some more and see if I can figure it out how to get the rear cover off.

Is there anything more you can share about how to get the handles and covers off, as I'm so close. I can see the two clips on the rear covers, but I can't see how you get in there to release the clips.

    :annoyed:

I think I'm going to do this, but put an LED in each tied to the dome light

For the front passenger door handle, you don't even need to remove the interior panel. Just unscrew the Torx screw behind the plug and remove the back cover. Then grab the handle and pull out and back and it'll slide right out.

I know this because I swapped the chrome handles on my Limited for painted black ones last week. I removed the interior panel first, then realized I didn't have to remove it at all.
