No. The "tip" I'm referring to is the expanded end of the tailpipe.

Then this would indicate that the pipe is vibrating and added weight stabilizes it , rather than wind catching in the inside of the pipe and howling ?

That's what I think...since hitting the outside with a pressure washer made the sound.
Wind is what's vibrating it; that's how I could get it to feather in and out.

Good find !! I wonder if those that have cutoff the tailpipe end for offroading etc. still have a howling sound .

My diff howl can be isolated by putting the truck on a lift and using a stethoscope, it is definitely the rear differential. Had the Regional FTS fly out from Denver and confirmed the rear differentials are causing this issue. Sounds like your issue is different.

FTS is the only way I have been able to get my truck fixed. The FTS I interacted with was Roney, Great individual that is aware of these issues. Dealership acts different when this guy is town. However, every time I leave the dealership, I have a new problem. Last visit was Saturday, power steering is squealing like it's everybody's business. I brought it up right away, but said they can't help me to call FTS first with any of my problems. This dealership is making Toyota look bad. Did the FTS have any answers to the rear differential?

My new diff howls, from what I can tell, the same. Toyota says it is quieter than my last one but still acknowledges the noise (I can hear it with a CD on over volume set at 20). They analyzed sound clips they took of my truck is what I was told.

The official word is that it is normal, not a safety concern, but to of course call them if something breaks.

So for now I hit that 60 mph decline on the way home from work, lean back and let it woooooooo wooooooooooo

My truck was bone-stock and started the howling noise at about 10k, and got worse up until I took it in at around 15k. It was most noticeable when letting off the throttle at under 60 mph, and coasting down to 55. I took it to the dealer; unfortunately the only solution was to replace the whole rear. About 3500-4000 miles into the new rear now; no noise to report yet.

    Amazing.

NOTE: The dealer's way of diagnosing this issue is what honestly scared me the most; they dropped the driveshaft and drove the truck with it in 4WD, with the front tires doing the work(like a FWD car). With the pinion unloaded, she screamed her ass off.

This is unexpected for 2017 model. Since they replaced my transfer case the rear differential howl has got worse. I noticed it more when they removed the drive shaft. FTS said it was normal, but I compared it with the 2017 model they lent me that had 20 miles on it. And that's not normal. IDK what happen at Toyota but they f$$ked this Tacoma up.

Update: got a call from the dealer today, apparently there's a TSB now. They're ordering the parts, I will have it done some time next week. Apparently it's some sort of damper for the transmission. I will update with more info when I get it.

I agree. I'd bet money that if the fix is transmission related then they will only fix the automatics and leave us with the manuals hanging and pissed.
