Get the VIN and check it with your favorite dealer... maybe CarFax or there is a guy on here that will run a check for you. I'm sure someone here has a link to his thread.

FYI that's not a J-shifter, that's the electronic 4hi shifter (I have the same one). The J-shifter is fully manual, without a 'push button' to activate 4hi. Not a big deal, the j-shifter seems to be more sought after around here though. It's not as common in the later model first gens. Clean looking interior though

Oh, interesting... I guess I associated j-shifter w/ any 4-lo/hi stick. Thanks for the knowledge

What would make the J shifter more sought after? I know the push button was a couple hundred bucks extra from the factory. I've had a tacoma with and without it and the push button is pretty nice. End of the day though they both do the same thing. I guess maybe the push button could break? haven't heard that being a problem though.

most prefer the J Shift because it is one less electric thing to fail.

That's pretty much it, there's one less thing to worry about with the j-shifter. The solenoid on the push button can fail and leave you without the ability to go into 4wd, easy fix but could be a big problem if you're out and about and need to use it. Not a common occurrence but a possibility.

Same reason why some people still prefer manual hubs, even though they're much less convenient

Understandable but at least it seems like the push button failing is very rare. Was just reading up on this though and the push button 4wd gives you a twin stick (2wd lo) mod that is super easy. Switch into lo and it's 2lo, press the button and its 4lo. Gonna have to do that to mine today since it's literally a 1min mod, haha.

OP, if you pick up this truck, here's the "write up" aka unplug this thing and you're done.
