Given that the "sound transit 3" passed, there will be insane rta tax, i checked my wives 2010 rx350 and she will now be paying 372.88 for tabs, i tried checking my truck, but it tells me the earliest I can check for an estimate is in April. So what are you paying?

Yea my 05 m3 is still $82, so I'm guessing there's a cutoff for an older vehicles. I'm hoping someone with 2016-17 tacos can chime in, I'd love to know how much lube to buy next time i go get tabs for mine

Mine's showing right about $150 for the truck.... I'm actually surprised it's staying so low. However, by the time I renew my tabs, I'll (hopefully) have a personalized plate. I think that brings the price up a little higher, too, yes?

I've heard some horror stories about how high the tabs are jumping...

Most all passenger vehicles here are the same unless you get special plates. Regular plates $80 every 2yrs.

Last year they were $160 for the taco. King County is horrible for taxing the hell outta you.

    EDIT to fix incorrect dates:
The new MVET rates go into effect on 3/1 while the Sales & Use Tax rate goes into effect 4/1 (April Fool's Day, how appropriate). So if your tabs are due before then, you won't see a difference until next year. Some of the online estimators number might not change until 3/1 (they might still be using 0.3% as the RTA base rate)

If you are in the RTA, your tabs will go up. There is no "old vehicle" cutoff. The new RTA tax is going from 0.3% of value ($30 minimum) to 1.1% of value ($110 minimum).

So if your old fee was $86 and you were in the RTA:
    $30 tab fee
    $46.25 RTA tax (0.3% of $15,416)
    $4 filing fee
    $5.75 service and tech fees
    Grand total $86

    After 3/1:
    $30 tab fee
    $170 RTA tax (1.1% of $15,416)
    $4 filing fee
    $5.75 service and tech fees
    Grand total $209.75 (+144% increase)

Thanks King and Snohomish County Voters!

I did find a loophole of sorts though. If you buy a heavy enough pickup (curb weight over 6,000 lbs, so 3/4T minimum), you don't pay RTA Tax! You pay a weight fee around $93 though. So if it is a new or newer truck, it can save you hundreds of dollars. A new $60k 3/4T pickup would be $660 in RTA tax, but since it weighs over 6,000 lbs, it's only $93. Power Wagon, here I come!

As a follow up. We get double-screwed on our Tacomas, since they are trucks under the 6,000 lb scale weight factor. So we are paying the gross weight fee AND the RTA tax.

I just looked at my registration, and it says my Gross Weight for the fee calculation is 8,000 lbs!!! That is completely and totally wrong, as the RCW says it should never exceed the legal maximum vehicle weight (5,450 in my case), but they calculate the tax in 2,000 lbs increments. So it should be the 6,000 lb fee for my truck, not the 8,000 lb fee. So I'm going to call the DOL tomorrow and ask them "WTF!"

The gross weight fee for 6,000 lbs is $73 while 8,000 lbs is $93. So I'm paying $20 too much. Jerks.....

Oh, and looking at my registration (12/16 - 12/17)
    Filing: $3.00
    Service: $5.00
    Gross Weight: $93.00
    RTA Tax: $46.00 (0.3% of $15,333 is what I reverse-calculated here)
    Total: $147.00

With those figures, and if I get my Gross Weight fixed, it should come to the following on my next renewal:
    Filing: $3.00
    Service: $5.00
    Gross Weight: $73.00
RTA Tax: $169.00 (using the same value of $15,333, but in theory it should be a little less than that.)
    Total: $250.00

    (70% increase in my case.)

Dang, I hope you're right, Wifey's car is due for tabs next month, but when I ran the estimate it shows the updated rate for rta.
Let me know what you figure out about the gross weight fees

What does your registration say for Gross Weight? Wonder if it is a "systemic" thing, or just a less common mistake.

Also, I just looked, and the MVET RTA tax goes into effect 3/1/17. The Sales & Use Tax increase goes into effect 4/1/17. So I messed those dates up a little.

What that means is you should buy your heavy truck before 4/1!!!
