    Thanks.

Yaesu makes a cable that adapts from 10 pin mini-din to 6pin mini-din

    Part CT-164 , $25

Then it would be possible to connect to mobilinkd cable you posted. That might work.

Can't find anybody who's done it though.

Thanks. If I find a way I'll post up.

If you have a gps enabled tablet or phone though is it worth a $25-70 cable for the 100dr? SSeems like your better off with the dual receive v71

I'm an apple guy so I don't have a droid friendly tablet - but it looks like you can pick one up for less then $100 with gps - if you already have a droid tablet or phone then it's a mute point- then you just need the mobilinkd for $65

So you can get the 100dr and the v71 for about the same price - if you already have a droid tablet then $65 for the mobilinkd and your good to go with aprs and dual recieve on the v71

With the 100dr you are spending the same money but only getting a single recieve....

I think I'm gonna go v71 and then pick up a droid friendly tablet and mobilinkd when I'm ready to go aprs

Newbie ham here. I've been looking at the 100dr compared to a normal analog radio (like the ftm3100r) and I *think* I'm going to go a similar route. I installed an Android head unit and have loaded APRSdroid on it - can use it with a hot spot or just use my phone for APRS.

Is there a benefit to routing the APRS data through the radio? Why not just use the tablet/phone as a stand-alone and negate the need for dual receive - unless I missed that part :)

The phone driven APRS won't work if you don't have service.

Not sure your comment was directed at me. I'll answer anyway.

I took the 100DR I have and have relegated it to UHF base station work. I had a vision of using it for dedicated APRS on trips, but I don't think that's gonna ever happen.

Re: Apple. Apple has deliberately crippled their devices by choosing to not support Bluetooth SPP. Kind of sad if you ask me. You can read up on that if you want.

For visual mapping solution, APRSDroid on a droid is a fast/easy way to go.

Full setup on its way from Gigaparts. Kenwood tm-v71a, lip mount for hood and 40" antenna. Going to be paired with my Garmin Montana for APRS. Thanks for all the helpful comments in here - will follow up with my call sign and pics in a couple weeks!

Has anyone run into issue of FM interference from HID Headlights? How did you get rid of it?

I suggested Ferrite Coils but this was his response.

@Lars not sure if you visit here.

I don't have a silver bullet for you guys, but I can offer some guidance.

Solving RFI or EMI can be a pain in the butt. Much of the consumer electronics bought today is garbage. It is so because it was designed poorly. A lot of circuits are designed as cheaply as possible and don't have proper filtering on the input or output, some have no shielding. Often times when these problems exist there is no good solution, but to find a better (properly) designed and built product.

My experience with RFI is limited to switching power supplies.

The best thing you can do for yourself is take some time and read up on RFI /EMI and how to solve it. Understanding the problem is crucial to solving it in a timely manner.

A Ham's Guide to RFI, Ferrites, Baluns, and Audio Interfacing

    ^ I recommend this guide.

I quoted some of my old posts below which have other links and useful info.

I get interference on the 17M band from my engine itself! Some minor interference from my LED lights on 10M... but not enough to worry about it.

    Yes.
I'll echo what @Crom said above. RFI/EMI is a pain in the dick, and almost always requires multiple components to eliminate all/most of it.
In my truck, the cheap LED pods I had required Ferrite chokes on the power leads. The cheap HID kit I had briefly installed couldn't be quieted. My solution was to replace the unnecessarily complex, and noisy HID kit with Halogen bulbs.

That guide linked above is pretty fantastic. Spend money, and do it right once. In the long run it'll save you a ton of time and frustration.

Waiting for my new UV-50X3 to come in the mail, along with my tri-band antenna :yay:
Was time to upgrade from my HT, and I like the way the panel looks along with the opportunity to check out the 220 band.
Anyone else have this unit yet that can lend your experiences with it?

Just checked the Btech site out. No experience with the radio here. It looks like a clone of the discontinued Yaesu FTM-350, but with some differences mixed in. 5W power for the 220 was better than 1W with Yaesu.

I've always been intrigued with the 1.25M band, but no means to TX on it. I monitored it for a long time. It's very quiet in San Diego, most of the time when there was traffic it was FILAMARS, Filipino-American Amateur Radio Society (FILAMARS). I never knew what they were saying, but I enjoyed listening to them speak. Weird but true. :D

I would be interested in hearing anything you have to share about the radio after you use it some.

    Which Antenna did you select?
