afaik this is the concern. if the erosion continues at the bottom of the concrete wall which makes up the emergency spillway, a large wall of water could break out of the top of the dam, emptying the topmost portion.

i really really really hope that this does not happen with the upcoming storm later this week.

Ah yes the train with no one to ride it, good use of scarce resources.

The danger is that if the erosion of the emergency spillway destroys the concrete part of the spillway across the top of the dam the dam will start eroding releasing much more water. The hole was right below the concrete part of the spillway.

I see there's a good explanation of this above that I didn't see before I posted this.

The regular spillway has a chunk the size of a football field broken out of it that's letting water out which could also erode the dam.

Why would you read national news when you want local news? Just look at local news...

Cuz I don't live in Cali? Here in the DC/Virginia area where I live we get political crapola for our local news. We also have to see the stupidity of the DC area and how poorly it's run. And then there's all the stories of felons being released and being arrested for murder and what not and the local news reports on it like it's shocking and we should feel sorry for them.

The national news is where we, in this area, get a view out of the bubble of stupidity in which I live.

The two main papers here are the Washington comPost and the Washington Times (owned by the Mooney cult people - not making this up). Both are left leaning and are for the most part unreadable.

Well, I am truly sorry you feel as if you cannot trust your local News agencies for their coverage. Since you live in DC and want to know whats happening in Norcal with our floods, why not look at NorCal local news coverage? I know you know how to use the internet...
