Ok 3.4 96 taco. Pulled oil filter had some oil in it. Squirted some oil in both holes where filter goes and filled filter and reinstalled it. Think its still not pumping. With oil cap off I see no oil splashing or anything. Am I going to be pulling an oil pan to fix this? I didn't do the swap. I payed for it to be done. He just handed it back and said they sold me a bad motor. No diagnosis at all.

How about the oil light... Does it go out when the engine is running?

It runs good for a minute or so then slowly starts a upper knock then it will just quit instantly. Like it ran out of oil and stops. But it will start up again. No oil on. If it works.

Is this replacement engine rebuilt, or is it used?

Used. Lots of miles. I had mechanic install new timing set before install (never again) had to change oil pans BC its automatic 2 wheel drive engine and its a 4×4 truck.

So on the 5VZ-FE V6, it looks like the harmonic balancer and oil pump have to be removed in order to change the timing belt. That's common on a lot of Toyota engines. It's possible that your mechanic forgot to prime the oil pump after reassembling and installing the engine. But you should ask them to test the oil pressure before you assume the oil pump is bad.

I am hoping that's it. I was thinking same thing. Now, Im the guy taking over the job, I have skills just didn't want to do it and thought he would do it faster. Boy was I wrong. So that's another "college lesson" I say. Cost me 900. I tried to squeeze oil in the port on block with oil filter off, also filled filter up and made a mess but spun it on. Pretty sure that didn't work.

Im really close to driving it up on ramps and pulling bolts. I see the other guy left a few loose, swivel socket and extension in skid plate, hoses kinked....grrrrr.

So is taking the pan off the only way to fix this problem?
