How's your fuel economy towing with that? Most I've towed is around 3500lbs (open trailer with four snow machines) and was getting about 10mpg, down from the normal 16-17mpg while doing 50-60mph in 4hi.

Yup that's about right on fuel econo, my trip to Canada I average 9mpg. no matter what the truck is, I don't think anyone will be getting much more than 12-14mpg towing a TT

GVW on the TT is pretty heavy for these trucks.

You only have 1390# of wiggle room. It doesn't leave you much to haul any toys...I.E. toy hauler. A good WD with sway control built in will help, air bags will help also and at the weight you are looking to tow will be highly recommended. But really, that TT is too heavy for the truck. Unless you don't plan on hauling any toys,

no not planning on hauling any toys becuz of that reason of "wiggle room". i think the truck will only allow me to carry 1 bike if that. but yea the trailer comes with a WD not sure about the sway control, but will look into it...any recommendations?

the toy hauler is a 30'+ idk if this will much of a problem but i just got my cdl:mudding::oldglory: so hopefully that helps.

ive read another thread 'the towing bible' and someone said i may need a larger tranny cooler? idk if this applies to the 3rd gen. Also, the thread mentioned something about a rear spring TSB performed, does this also apply to the 3rd gen?

i will be getting the brake control and tranny temp gauge.

In regards to a larger trans cooler, ABSOLUTLY YES, I would highly recommend it. one more thing, you do realize that the Dry hitch weight of your new trailer is 715# and our trucks are only rated for 640#. I understand you will be using a weight distribution, but regardless, its still over what the truck is capable of. You need to also think about stopping the TT, even though you will have a break control, the short wheel base and the GVW of our trucks will make it difficult to stop that camper in an emergency situation. I just don't want to see you on the news as an accident, death resulting. I think your TT is to big for your truck, in regards to the weight's of the TT and the length. Just my 2 cents

thanks for the info gmann, you probably know by now im new to this and we are first time buyers(had to look up what dry hitch means...). I didnt decide to get the TT yet and with the info ur giving me im starting to have a change...such a small window to shop in

if our dry hitch weight is rated at 640 # would this mean i would need a dry hitch weight of around 400 #?

I would stick with a Dry Hitch weight of no more than 500#, this will allow for extra weight up front on the tongue. Remember dry weight means just that, no propane tanks, no battery, no tongue jack, no front storage items. propane tanks=30#'s each, battery= +/-50#'s, jack= =/- 25#'s, total 105#'s +/-, front storage, ??. I understand your new to the TT family, and that's great, welcome. Just be smart about what you are going to tow. I have always been a fan of what our trucks can tow, as long as the truck is set up to pull what you have without going over the manufacturers towing specifications. I'm glad you are asking questions before making a bad decision, we here on TW are here to help anytime. Below is what I am towing.

Not trying to be an ass, but can you explain? I'm having a hard time finding opinions on my situation.
2010 Tacoma, v6 6sp manual 4x4 offroad with factory tow package and have had the tsb for the rear leaf springs done. Towing 6x13' utility trailer, loaded up with be somewhere between 3200-3800# depending on camping gear. I've heard people say need aftermarket rear leaf packs, air bags, transmission coolers, etc. If you were in my situation which precautions would you recommend? I already have electric brakes with a p3 controller installed.

You'll be fine towing that with your truck as it sits now.

Thanks for the input. At what weight should air bags/aftermarket leaf packs be considered? I should also mention, the truck is on 285's with 3" of suspension lift.

The numbers say you'll be good. But experience and common sense says you would be pushing it. Probably should use a full size to be safe.

There is absolutely no need to use a full size truck to tow 3500lbs. The Tacoma can and will do it all day long with no problems. The only downside is lower gas mileage while towing.
