It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.
how are you liking the truck? your tranny fluid is making me think I should have made them check mine. almost 20k on it already but at least I'm about to have less miles on my motor than you do...:D

did they try to give you the run around "its sealed, no way to check fluid without a rebuild blah blah"

I love it! the whistle from the front LCA is pretty annoying when the radio is not on, but its rare that its not on. Also the trac control is super annoying when on a hill, if you don't punch the gas quick enough and you start to roll back that shit starts making all kinda of noise and vibes. Maybe there is a way to turn that off forever?!

mine doesnt make the lca whine, but the rear diff howls around 45mph.

the rollback doesnt have a fix. only the off roads and pros do it. the other trims have an actual good "hill start assist", but because ours have the fancy MTS, etc it uses the abs as a bullshit hillstart. it will stop it but not before you roll back a couple feet, and it sounds like hell. makes the same noise using the MTS

what i do if im trying to line up the ball to a trailer on a hill or something is the same thing i do offroad. just lightly drag the brake with left foot and accelerator with right

Yeah it's all good, but damn, that's the loudest and crunchiest sounding ABS I've ever heard! I lol when I wonder how many calls Toyota has gotten about it.

The low transmission fluid is bullshit. so is the difs but thats easy to check and fix yourself. the tranny issue, in my opinion, is a class action case. As far as I can tell it's not isolated by region of assembly (Mexico or US). It's a manufacturing fault, one of many that Toyota knows about, but this one has the most legs in my opinion. The goal is to get extended drivetrain warranties. I'm pretty sure they would do that before they issue a recall. I don't think they issue recalls unless bodily harm can come of it. That's where the big money hurts them. But a class action lawsuit for denying claims of a problem known by Toyota would win, all we need is reasonable evidence showing that Toyota knew of the problem (you, me, everyone else needs to file a complaint to corporate (this is the most important part!), so there is a SIGNIFICANT papertrail that would lead a reasonable jury to think Toyota America was denying legitimate claims.

Honestly it's hard to judge on a grand scale, but if i believe TW probably 60-80% have low tranny fluid. Yours was low .5, ladyred was 1.5. THATS a problem!

many others ojn the third gen report low and probably 80% like myself are too lazy or don't even TW and never know theres a problem.

So I just got done crawling around underneath my 4Runner and I noticed some fantastic news. My CVs are blowing grease. Its not just too awful yet but I know its just going to continue to get worse. My problem is that I really wanna replace all my suspension soon but have a feeling that I may need to replace the CVs before I upgrade my suspension. Now I have a few questions, 1. Who would want to help me with this job? and 2. How long should I wait to replace them? I can get them for cheap so thats not the problem, nor is the actual replacing (that i can really tell). Opinions?

For real though, I was just in the exact same boat. Well, my hubs were bad and I figured it was time for some new CVs to be on the safe side. But regardless we did this job last weekend.

If you're going to wheel at all, I (and most of the forum) would recommend either finding a new-ish pair from a junkyard from a totaled truck, or going with a reputable refurbisher. The cheap RockAuto and AdvanceAuto will break on you, and even though they have lifetime replacement warranties, you'll get tired of changing them.

They are a *fairly* cheap piece, but you need to do it if it needs doing. Don't wait on the lift.
