Hey guys, I purchased a pair of flush mount led pods for my rear bumper. I want them to come on when in reverse and have a switch on the dash to turn them on. I'm decent with wiring but I'm not sure how to go about this. If I connect them to the stock backup lights and run a switch from the dash with separate 12v power, won't that also turn on the stock backup lights? I think I'm missing something on how to accomplish this.

Good idea. I used a spdt on a ham radio build a few months the ago. I'll need to find the reverse light wiring up under the dash... Time to do some research!

    Thanks

    5 pin relay.
85-ground, 86-pos from switch, 30-to flush mount LED, 87-fused power, 87A- from factory rev circuit

Highly suggest waterproof/marine grade relay and connector.

On my 99 the red wire with black strip at the connector under the driver seat is the reverse wire. You probably have something similar in your truck but I doubt the colors are the same.

I too was considering this same setup but then figured if I was running a switch to the dash anyway, why deal with the headache of wiring them to the reverse lights as well? If I need more light the switch is right there on the dash. But I'm also in the Los Angeles area, where a bright reverse light could piss someone off enough to shoot me :fenforcer:

The 5-pin relay way is the route I took on my previous truck, and will now do to my Taco. What route did you end up going with?? Or hopefully you haven't been shot yet....

If you're tying in to existing wiring and using a switch make sure to use a diode

    My KISS method as well.

I'm much more likely to use the light for loading or such than for actual backing up.

I have upgraded the OE reverse bulbs, and the camera picks up surroundings just fine with those. And if I suddenly find I need more backing light, hit the switch.

You can also go off of the rev. wire from the 7-way tow connection, and wire to relay, etc, etc... I'm just not too sure what color wire it is, but shouldn't be too hard to find.....

Yellow wire with small grey marks on it in the center of the trailer plug is the best reverse wire; also shown on the cover of the plug, the wire diagram....... Cheers!!!!!!
