My question is for anybody that has done this and what their thoughts are on its location. Can you see it /use it well or is it just too low in this model truck and dash configuration ?

I have a 2Din touchscreen & GPS. Honestly, its way too low. And on top of that, being a touch screen is a pain and clumsy to operate. The GPS and Bluetooth on the other hand are worth the grief.

Some models have a setting where you can set the tilt angle and it helps a lot.

I have a Pioneer AVIC 5100-NEX and have been very happy with it. I drive a third gen but for what its worth the Pioneer piece has a pretty accurate touch screen and a logical layout of menus and apps. Its setup very similarly to an android phone with a few stock apps and your most recently used apps right on the home screen, as well as access to the settings menus. Also gives the option to customize the button lighting, background screens, etc.

For just updating your stereo, it fits/looks great. I worked out of state for almost a year and got so accustomed to having bluetooth in my rental car, I had to upgrade when I got home. I wouldn't want my navigation down there though, wayyy too low

I'd recommend a unit with a tilt feature. Mine doesnt.

Yes the loaner I'm in while my truck is in for frame replacement - has sold me on the Bluetooth. And yes the stereo I've considered has a tilt and Apple Play - Just a lot of money and want to get some opinions. I appreciate you all chiming in.
This is the system I am considering -

I always put in double dins on all my previous cars just for the look, it is a tad low on 1st gens and 3rd gen 4runners, but the functionality is awesome.

I had a similar pioneer my previous car and put into my wife's currrent Kia and she has better bluetooth features and clarity on her phone than my new tacoma.

It woke up my subaru and the kia it's currently in. (I mounted the mic on the a pillar on both vehicles)

    Do it!!!

I went from a double to a single din with bluetooth and usb port up front. I find that using my phone connected via bluetooth for navigation purposes when needed worked out better than trying to use the built-in nav in my previous double din. I also use spotify for music, so my single din is practically a bluetooth receiver.

Granted I'm comparing my newer single din Alpine to an older Alpine double din that was a hand me down for my truck. I did find that having the double din that low was made it difficult to use. Also, if the sun is hitting it just right, the "tilt" feature may not help much.

I have a double din in mine and there are times where i can not see the screen and have to use my hand as a shield. Its a kenwood unit that has bluetooth and usb and aux and video functions.
The volume knob is in the perfect place when i'm in 1st 3rd or 5th but other than that i've been contemplating getting a single din that has a pop out screen so i can still utilize a rear view camera and have space for more switches in a consolidated place below the unit. The pop out will cover my hvac, but living in san diego i rarely touch them; it will also raise the screen to a more viewable area (also think the pop out ones are more adjustable in regards to tilt).

    My 2cent

Sony XAV-AX100 $469.00 on eBay w/free shipping.. I think its great.. Nav works awesome.. Better than my Pioneer that was $1000.00 with a bunch of features I never used.
I mainly play music off my iPod, pandora and use the handsfree option.. No regrets..

Here's how mine sits when in the driver's seat.

It's low and can be dangerous if you're used to adjusting functions while driving. I also have a rear view camera installed and it's hard to see the screen sometimes due to the glare + my angle of looking down.

That said, I'm glad I put it in still. Mine has Apple CarPlay and that is a great feature, especially using Siri to do navigation, calls, etc. I would still do it if I had to do it over again.

Thanks. With my truck being in the shop I just couldn't remember what it looked like and how low it would be.

I installed this $120 Pioneer in my 04. Works as easily as the stock unit, but isn't touchscreen and no navigation. Still trying to figure out how to get the Sirius XM antenna out the rear of the headliner and through the third brake light.

i have an earlier version of that model. DDX371 Has volume knob on the left. Good interface. play spotify through bluetooth and have a thumb drive loaded with music hooked up. Its served me well. Also have 4 6x9 pioneer 4way speakers hooked up to it and a 10" kicker with 1000watt amp powering it. EQ is versatile and it powers the speakers pretty good for now (hooking up a 4 way amp in to power them is down the line)
