My 2nd had the same issues. Same shit.

Atleast we are whining about this stuff, and not interior door handles ripping off in your hands like my buddies' silverado. It is a known problem and GM refuses to deal with it. They say it's a "wear item" - a friggen door handle!!!!

 

GM builds excellent drive trains while the rest of the vehicle caves in around you.

 

What about them is at all "excellent"?
They're not especially reliable (I've dealt with more than my fair share of blown GM transmissions and various other premature part failures like alternators and exhaust sensors), and they've always been pretty terrible on fuel. The only reasons why their engines sometimes manage to keep running for more than a decade is because they are 3 times the displacement that they should be, although even then, I have a buddy who bought a new GM truck about a decade ago, and after about 15000 km, its block CRACKED. Warranty yes, but what the hell?

 

Ive owned GM, my buddies and family members. No drive line issues ever. Ive also owned Dodge Rams. V10 and Hemi's. Those also have been bullet proof drive trains granted the transmissions are the heavy duty variety while the rest of the vehicle has caved in.

 

My GMC Sierra Denali was perfect never a single issue in 3 years of ownership. It sucked on gas but it was AWD and had the 6.2L

 

Well.... 3 years. That isn't exactly a well tested vehicle. Still what I would call "brand new".

 

OK fair comment but then consider all of the issues I've had on my 3rd Gen in the first year of ownership....

I think its probably pretty safe to say that the 2GR-FKS is more for people who want the *image* of a truck, than who want an *actual* truck.

 

What are you driving these days?

 

'11 w/2TR. Smaller, but its a truck engine that's built like a truck engine, cast iron block and all.

 

They could have actually done a really nice V6 update if they'd put some more effort into it rather than just straight up transplanting a passenger car / minivan engine into it. Something like a 1GR-FKS, with a button to manually disable the sortof-atkinson mode and make it work just like a 1GR-FE. The 1GR has a longer stroke, which is way better for torque, but also makes it a lot more severely affected by the "sucking on vacuum" energy loss at low throttle positions than the short-stroke 2GR. This long stroke characteristic also means that adding the sortof-atkinson mode would actually have a greater impact on that engine than it would on the 2GR.

And the sad part? I bet you that the 2GR-FKS heads are compatible with the 1GR block.

Yeah I really want to know what happened behind the scenes with management that allowed this engine to get dropped in to this truck. This was not the only way they could have gone and by far not the best way they could have approached it.

 

Maybe as simple as "if we can make this engine work in this truck we will have 1 v6 across X vehicle lines which reduces costs economies of scale blah blah blah"

 

I really don't get all the hatred for the V6. I have one. I have the 4.0 as well in my 4Runner. I had the 2.7 in my 95 Tacoma. I've had them all.

The 3.5 is fine. It's not super powerful. It's not anemic. It's not exciting. It is adequate for the truck though.

I judge Toyota engines by their longevity so only time will tell how I remember this powerplant.

My 2.7 had 275k miles when I sold that truck. My 4.0 blew a head gasket at 120k but I fixed it and still own it.

For the time being, I'm satisfied. Paired with the manual transmission it isn't a bad engine.

 

That is exactly it, Kaizen makes them use that engine in as many platforms as possible to cut costs.
