Yep with mechanical speedo, but still a NP231J so I'm happy about that.

Will be doing SYE from Advance Adapters and a Tom Woods Driveshaft soonish....

Curious why it doesn't work. They are pretty reliable.

Oh, you were referring to why the 4wd doesn't work. The transfer case works like a champ. I have 2Hi, 2Hi and 2Lo. Front drive shaft spins.

I ordered a part to fix the 4wd, it's actually the 3 piece axle in the front on the Dana 30. They called it a CAD (Central Axle Disconnect) and they use a vacuum pump to move a collar over to engage the right front wheel between the front diff and the wheel itself. It's a dumb design and prone to constant failures in the XJ and YJ's that used them.

I ordered this to fix it:
    https://www.amazon.com/Alloy-USA-45...869260&sr=8-2&keywords=cad+disconnect+jeep+yj

That will lock the front axle in place, giving me the classic 2Hi > 4Hi > 4Lo that everyone raves about.

Meanwhile having 2Lo with an open diff is kinda been fun to play with a little. Wicked good dirt flinging.

Ya I remember that vacuum pump, I'll have to see what company makes a lever and cable so you just pull it. Way more reliable than that crap

Gas sucks to start fires, after the fumes are gone it's done. Diesel or get it started and used motor oil. In my case diff fluid

Yeah I've heard you've gotta be pretty patient on it. Is there a top speed you can go?

Like the TRD performance brake pads.......... "speed up to a fast but safe speed, then brake as hard and firmly as possible, without losing control of your vehicle".......

Ideas of what I can use as a step, for my short family? Something I can attach to sliders. A rope step of some sort?

Be easy on it and fluctuate speed. Don't go over 60 the first 50 miles. And it needs to cool after 45 miles of driving. Some say 20 minutes is enough but I waited atleast an hour. It not bad, it's kind of like house arrest, you can go out but can't really have any fun.
